I've got a secret to tell you. And I need your help to expose it.
When we received a tip-off about a hidden trade in European farm animals we knew we had to find out more. But to do that our Investigation Unit had to visit one of the world’s most volatile border crossings, the Israeli‑controlled Kerem Shalom border, where the Gaza Strip, Israel and Egypt converge. They brought back some shocking evidence, which I’m sharing with you today.
What they found was a trade in cattle, transported from the EU, being sent alive into war-torn Gaza to be slaughtered. They tracked down animals who had travelled thousands of miles by land and sea from Romania and Hungary – via Israel – to Gazan slaughterhouses where, frankly, it just isn’t possible to slaughter an animal without causing immense suffering

EU data makes it look like this trade doesn’t exist. No EU country reports live exports to the Gaza Strip or anywhere else in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). But, according to figures obtained from the Israeli authorities in the first 10-months of 2014 alone, 27,000 European animals crossed into the OPT.
The truth is this isn’t exactly a secret anyone is trying to hide. It’s just that when animals are exported live out of the EU, anything could happen to them. No government official really knows where they go, how they are treated, or how they are killed. Once animals leave the EU, the European Commission washes their hands of them. In recent correspondence with Compassion, the head of the European Commission said that although EU law states that ‘full regard should be paid to animal welfare’, that doesn’t apply to animals being traded. I don’t think that’s good enough. Do you? Tell the Commissioners; this has to stop. Thank you for your support. With your help, we'll keep up this fight as long as it takes. The infrastructure in Gaza means that the slaughterhouses are incredibly basic. There’s no proper restraint equipment, and the workers appear to have no training in correct slaughter practice.
The cattle are dragged with ropes from the back of trucks, tied to pillars, and have their throats stabbed and slashed at multiple times. The cattle desperately fight to stay standing even once their throats are cut, but once they collapse they endure seconds, even minutes, of agony as workers continue to hack at their throats. This kind of treatment would be totally in breach of EU law but when animals leave Europe they are no longer protected. EU data makes it look like this trade doesn’t exist. As I've said before, I buy eggs from caged hens because they are cheaper. I've a family to feed and I'm on a tight budget. I don't like to see any animal suffer but I've bigger things to worry about than the welfare of animals. For this reason I won't be signing your petition because it would be hypocritical of me.
