The FTSE 100 has broken a record that had stood for more than 15 years and hit a new all-time high, boosted by investor optimism that Greece would not be forced out of the eurozone.
Britain’s benchmark index of leading shares climbed as much as 46.73 points to 6,958.89, a 0.7pc advance that meant the FTSE 100 finally surpassed its previous intraday peak of 6,950.6 that was set on December 30, 1999, just before the dotcom bubble burst.
The FTSE 100 total return index, which includes both share price growth in dividends, is up 66% over the Millennium. £10,000 invested on 31 December 1999 would be worth £16,694 today, with dividends reinvested.
