I think people should work providing there is a full time job for them, on at least minimum wage which they can do
I have no trouble with that. |
By:
How do you think people live on £70 a week....this aint no life of luxury
By:
Pish
if work is cyclical in nature then SOME of the unemployed at any one time could be given a liveable wage ,but i get the impression it's just another way of providing free labour |
By:
Yet a significant minority seem to live and enjoy this non-luxury lifestyle.
A culture of entitlement has poisoned this society. |
By:

______________ people don't those who are unemployed will have long thought of ways to attain a living for themselves as well as claiming CTB and HB- those who are hardest hit will be those who work in modest employment and pay rent . That's a lose ,lose situation and is the most common scenario in the UK for the UNDER 40S |
By:
A bit of a generalisation, assuming all the unemployed are on the fiddle, only a minority do this
as in fact a minority in our society are on the fiddle from top to bottom. Still we live in society which places personal greed above everything else, so it is predictable |

Crippen: Out of respect for a fellow poster i won't rip your bowels out on this fred.

ebul - don't be naive

There are large parts of our cities which are eye sores which nobody is now paid to clean or will be in the future so I'd have thought that in addition to helping these people develop a work ethic they can be assisted to develop community pride and cohesion. Help and old lady with her shopping. Cut and old boys lawn. There's no end of possibilities and another really great thing is that old lady or old man may know somebody who is looking for a good honest grafter.
What a fantastic career path that is. ![]() BTW the first part of that paragraph is what I was getting at. You say 'nobody is paid to clean or will be in the future'. Why not increase the workforce at local councils to cover this? |
By:
How do you pay for them Akabula? Public sector workers are to a lesser or greater extent contributors to society but they don't generally generate income. What you advocate just involves taking yet more money off those who do generate income. Now if you were to advocate getting rid of all the non jobs which are usually advertised in The Guardian then maybe councils could afford to get back to doing things for which we pay our local taxes like keeping the neighbourhood clean and emptying bins etc.
By:
The whole idea sounds like a glorified Bob-a-Job scheme. Dib dib dib.
By:
Why not increase the workforce at local councils to cover this?
Yes an awfully good idea akabula. Not everything can be run at a profit. I notice yesterday the police are understaffed. To pay for this we take taxes from those who can afford it. |
By:
And many who are paying the taxes are worse off than those sat at home with no intention of working.
By:
When the scheme gets going and the unemployed get set to do menial tasks for their pittance, they might start to realise just how little they are personally worth.
Even the amounts they already get for nothing are generous when you add LHA to the bill. And you have to include the people needed to collect the taxes, and the army of office workers required to distribute their dole money. They are even laying on food banks for the unemployed now. All that lot provided for people who are simply a drain on the economy. And they've started complaining already. |
By:
Indeed.
The poisonous culture of entitlement that has dogged this country for decades. People permanently parked on benefits with no questions asked in order to secure their votes. |
By:
The easy alternative, in the short term, for everyone involved. Easy for the layabouts, easy for the government, easy for the police.
Thats the view of this simpleton, anyway. |
By:
This is good news for all councils.
They can now sack all their street cleaners, dustbin men, park wardens, toilet attendants, and those that do any other jobs that require little or no skill. Then have them all back and do it all for free on JSA. Thus lowering your council tax bill along the way. |
By:
No it isn't good news for councils.
The councils will have to spend money on supervising the work and checking that people are turning up to do it. The work they do will amount to little more than tidying the place up and helping out. They'll be more trouble than they're worth. They won't be doing anybody out of a job. It's just a way of getting some of the unemployed out of their comfort zones and perhaps thinking that if they've got to do that they might as well try and get a job. |
By:
Most of the unemployed would love a job outdoors tidying up and helping out Crippen.
The real question here is, if there are jobs out there then why can`t the job centre help out more? Why are these people unloaded on to the councils? Why is the job centre such a failure? |

Immigration is at the root of it.
The kids aren't being taken on and trained like they used to be. They simply import ready trained workers from abroad now. After the limited number of training places they are giving out have gone, all that's left for most of the kids is menial work. |
By:
I agree it is by no means easy to find full time employment for the low - skilled. Immigration = cheap efficient labour to most businesses requiring low-skilled workers.
And as i have pointed out before most immigrants are working a skill level below what they would in there home country. So UK employers are also getting more brain for their pound by employing foreign workers. |
By:
*their not there - see what i mean!
By:
Indeed.
The working class - Labour's core support - have been betrayed by them throwing open the doors to cheap labour from the new EU countries in 2004. |
By:
I wish we could go back to the seventies when the unions were ruining the country.
They wouldn't have stood for what's happening now with jobs and public services. More people renting, low paid jobs, overburdened public services, the unemployed forced to work in the community. We're going backwards. The working classes have got nobody to represent them at all now. Certainly not the Labour party. They're just being brushed aside, with governments putting company profits before anything else apart from themselves. |
By:
My pal who is pro unlimited immigration said to me the other day.
`Education is really important for the kids these days` so i asked him if unlimited immigration gave them a brighter future or not, his reply was that we are also free to migrate. Seems to be the libertarian point of view on this. I don`t buy into it. |
By:
If you could go back 40 or 50 years, and tell somebody then what it would be like now they wouldn't believe you.
By:
AG,
So he refused to address the question. Because if he did he wouldn't have much of a case for immigration in that regard. |
By:
Correct Crippen, complete tribal denial.
He would be happy to live in Australia though. |
By:
you only need so many hands to pick up litter -it's not a major problem .
the worst areas are where the scruffbags already live ,so let them sort it out . ![]() I know my street is tidy because we know to behave ,we know what bins to use as well . I believe the longer term unemployed could be given a chance to maybe do some community work helping the elderly (where safe to do so ) maybe for a few hours a week ,but something that gives a little reward |
By:
It doesn't matter what they are actually doing. It could be digging holes and filling them in. The various benefits to them and society are almost incalculable.
By:
The problem is how long are people on these schemes? Even the willing can become disillusioned if they aren't offered anything better after doing their bit for society.
By:
NOOOOO eTERNAL - it's about self confidence and this govt takes it away from a great many through the pathetic system .
we live in a society where some really thick feckers make important decisions in society because they happen to be good at passing exams . Like - let's give someone a 60k salary because they are good at making pretty shapes with playdough . what about those who have actual talent and good decision making/problem solving skills but get overlooked ? a lot of these may end up unemployed or in shyte work , some go their own way and milk the system for good measure - and then it's misunderstood why none of them want to work lol |
By:
luckily the internet allows clever people to use their brain to make money these days - but it wasn't always like that
By:
because they happen to be good at passing exams .
Absolutely coachbuster I agree with you, there's not much else to go on that's the problem. |
By:
Great news. After 6 months of community work you are now qualified for a zero hours, minimum wage job in a chicken gutting warehouse.
By:
What do you suggest T&C?
By:
Just pointing out the reality of the situation and why many choose to play the system when they look at the alternatives.
By:
Yeah, stay in bed and let everyone else pay for their upkeep.
By:
Its human nature. Those at the top end of the social scale play the system in a different way.
By:
It's all going nicely to plan.
