Mild featured in Corrie tonight. I haven't seen it for years. Is it really still available

I don't even know what mild is but I think Albert Tatlock drank it in The Rovers Return. Is it like Caffreys?

I remember it as dark ,burnt sort of taste,low alcohol but cheap....one and nine a pint in the late sixties.

Yorkshires oldest independent Brewery Sam Smith's Mild is my drink in the local boozer , top stuff and less than 2 quid a pint.

used to be a popular miners drink as it was light, cheap and not to high in alcohol. I'd have thought Bank's Mild was the most famous loads of Brummies used to drink it and it also used to get mixed with brown ale.

Brown and Mild, Light and Bitter. Takes me back to my teenage days behind the bar at my old local. "Mind how you pour that White Shield. got a sediment in the bottom". Newcastle Brown - "Top off only, half pint glass and don't pour it". One of the locals was a hopeless poacher - and only person who could arrange ONE rabbit in a game bag (that would take a dozen) so that part of it was showing.

worked in a pub once where all the 'ullage' was strained back into the mild barrel,
but not when down to last 1/4 barrel. when a new barrel was put on with no ullage regulars used to complain about the lack of taste |

White Shield that's a blast from the past. Making a comeback now it's being brewed in Burton again. Loads of the old brewery workers have a drink called Night Nurse which is half pint of Pedigree or draught Bass topped up with Gold Label, it's very warming.

Low alcohol content meant that barrel, once broached, had to be sold quickly. That, and the move towards lighter coloured beers and the 'lager' generation pretty much did for Mild. That fashion also hammered the sales of spirits such as dark Rum.
