A man out celebrating his stag in Dublin has avoided a jail term for hitting another man in the face with a glass.
Karl Harffy (34) was in Howl at the Moon on Merrion Square when Ronan Flood accidentally bumped into him. Harffy first punched the man in the face before hitting him a second time with a glass.
The court heard that while Mr Flood (24) only sustained small cuts which were closed with paper stitches, there were concerns that his eye could have been damaged.
He was seen at the Eye and Ear Hospital where it was confirmed that no shards of glass had penetrated his eye.
Harffy was nominated as a suspect after a barman who witnessed the assault pointed him out to gardaí. He later told gardaí in interview that the victim was aggressive and confrontational.
He claimed he had acted in self defence and that Mr Flood and his friends had been provoking him.
Harffy, who is originally from Manchester, but now living in Kintyre Park, Ballymena, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm on December 1, 2013. He has no previous convictions.
Judge Martin Nolan sentenced Harffy to two years, suspended in full and ordered him to pay €3,000 to the victim with 18 months.
He said “being drunk is no excuse, if you’re drunk you’re responsible”
I seem to remember a court case in England recently wear a guy was convicted of rape because a woman was deemed too drunk to be responsible for her actions.
Are the laws in Ireland completely different from rest of British isles?

My prediction is that ebul will agree with the judge. 
Men are discriminated against in our supposedly tolerant country now. The wimmin would lynch anyone who even suggested that lady was responsible for anything more than an afterthought.
Surely the British isles includes Ireland.

Nope. Just googled it and it defines The British isles as a group of islands consisting of the islands of Great Britain, Ireland and over 6000 smaller islands.

I hadn't seen that before. It was wiki that I referred to as well. 
Reading it though I think it is a more recent development than 1922 as there is a reference to 2003.
Seems a bit petty either way though.

Actually remembering back we always referred to it as the British Isles (ie Ireland included) but it was The United Kingdom and Northern Ireland rather than just The United Kingdom which to my mind would have included NI anyway.

OP suggests that this is similar to a rape victim contributing to being the victim of rape by being too drunk to be responsible for her (their) actions. This is boll ocks isn't it?

Gosh, Ebulgery, didn't expect a net so soon, even from you. But in case you hadn't noticed this is not a gender issue. the diffence (and in law too) is a difference is between perpetrator and victim. In crude terms (especially for you) for the former it is no defence and for the latter it is no justification. Some difference
