more than 50% of marriages end in divorce...and many of the rest stay in bad relationships because they are 'married', marriage is an out of date tradition IMO.
Unless you are a devout christian / religous person, I can only presume  people do it our of the fear of losing their loved one, like it is some kind of guarantee that the way they feel now will last better/forever if they have a ring and piece of paper.

I'm not really knocking it, I just don't understand why non religious people do it...
I am not married, but have been with my lady for 17 odd years and have 2 primary school age kids.... Yet I often get people asking why we haven't got married, like there is something the matter with us or that we don't love each other.
When I turn the question back on them and ask them why they got married, they say things like 'to show our love and commitment to each other'  and then they get all defensive when you suggest 'so you didn't feel like that before you got married?'

Has anyone got married recently or planning on getting married, if so I am interested in your reasons for doing so?

I even get it from people who have had two or more marriages/divorces s in the time we have been together!! truly bizarre, I feel like saying 'coz I aint a stupid as you' bit of course I don't,

Marriage popularity resurgence now that its also for gays.

I actually think that not being married would make people stay together more, if you feel like you are caged, then your instinct is to try and escape, but a cage can be a safe and secure place if you have the key to the door...

I'm sure you have made your mind up if there is any point to it or not, so I cannot understand why the subject would interest you?

I would like to understand peoples reason for doing it in this day and age, I am curious, I am not looking to be converted, I am not looking to condemn, just an understanding.... is that so hard to understand?

I am 46 and i never got married. I have had a variety of relationships in a variety of countries (I have always traveled).

I think if you ask most men, hand on heart, do they want a life with one woman, and they know there is no consequence to telling the truth, then most would say no.

We want change, variety, excitement, something new, something to spark the passion back and yes, lust plays a part.

The concept of being with one person for 50 odd years is well, too limiting, not fitting of the modern era. For most people anyway.

I think it's different for everybody. I'm married for over 40 years.
I would find it difficult if for whatever reason I was left on my own.
Looking at what funkymonkey says doesn't make me think I've lost out or anything but I can understand it.
I still find my wife attractive and still enjoy her company although it is good to get a break from time to time.

Akabula, if you had not got married 40 years ago, do you think you and your wife would still be together?

for me, Marriage is not a building block of society, marriage was just another way of keeping people under control ..... This is not the dark ages, why should people feel obliged/guilty etc etc  to spend there lives being miserable and unhappy because they made a 'mistake' a few years ago.

Why isn't love enough?  why do people feel the need to be bound together by imaginary chains? does it feel different after getting married? and if it does, what was the point in getting married because presumably it was great before getting married, is it in the hope of getting a bigger high/love, like some sort of addiction? or is it the need to have societies or family approval?

Pretty sure there are a number of tax benefits, a quick google suggests there are , but I can't be asked to look into the details.

marriage is wonderful with the right person

I don't understand you mention that you think that not being married would make more people stay together and then you mention marriage controls people and makes them fell obliged to stay together. How does it control them if it makes them more likely to leave their partner if they want to.

I would have to personally disagree with not wanting a life with one woman, if it is the right woman, then there is nothing more rewarding. "If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far go together." - African proverb

Marriage is mostly for the benefit of the non-ambitious home-maker fairer se x. A show of good faith so that she isn't left with nothing when things go t!t$ up. See Beyonce's video Put a Ring on it for further analysis.

In some pension schemes the wife gets widows pension -the cohabitee gets nothing.
Husband to wife transfers of assets in live and on death I think are tax free -not so for cohabitees .

To make a marriage work long term, most men need to have the occasional affair; it's only then that they realise how lucky (or how unlucky) they are being married.
Report akabula • February 5, 2015 9:15 PM GMT
@Ampleforth.
I think you're analysing it too much. Why do people do anything? Convention?
I might be lucky but whether married or not I'm sure we would still be together.
I chose to get married. I wanted to get married. So I did. where's the problem in that.
If the marriage breaks down then people can separate and divorce. Not sure they are trapped.
You might have your own thoughts on marriage but loads will not agree with you.
