The finality and inevitability of death is almost comforting. It does not matter what you believe , who you worship. It does not matter if you are right/wrong a dreamer or a dope a murderer or a model citizen. It does not matter even if you are terrified of him or embrace him: The Grim Reaper awaits.
Never seek to know for whom the bell tolls |

Christopher Hitchens said
"It will happen to all of us, a tap on the shoulder and told not just that the party is over but slightly worse the party's going on but you have to leave." My own death does not bother me and I hope it's not to quick but more of an illness so I can do things before I go. I will be in pieces though when anyone close to me dies as I have been fortunate to not have a great deal of tragedy to cope with. |

A man strolling in a busy market place turned a corner and came face to face with Death - whilst scared out of his mind he also noticed that Death had a very puzzled expression on his face and seemed to hesitate in his stride towards him. Grabbing his chance to escape the man rushed off to get lost in the crowd- he then ran to and just managed to board the first train as it was leaving and rode it all night til he came to a distant city.
Stepping off the train he bumped into Death on the platform- before dying he asked Death why he had looked so surprised the day before and Death replied: I did not expect to see you there- you were supposed to die here and i wondered how on earth you would get to this place on time..... |

I think as you grow older you obviously think about death more and more. Its the same reason why people become more religious as they grow older, they are clinging to a faith, a belief that there is a better life waiting on the other side. That death isnt so final. I would like to think there is more after we pass away but scientifically, I am doubtful. It never crossed my mind when I was younger, thought I was immortal lol. Now days, I would say it scares me but like someone said, its the way in which we die is the scary part, not the passing on part.
On a lighter note and back to the original question...I hate flying and have a overseas trip coming up, the thought of dying on the flight or crashing is on my mind. Im quite positive like that So at the moment it scares me 9-10 on the scale. Will be back down to 2 after the flight. |

I'm finding the serious replies on this one quite amusing. I'd put it to you that the only 'correct' answer here is that you don't truely know how scared of death you are until the reality of it stares you square in the face! At that point i'd be about 1.20 that most people are about a 15 (on the 1-10 scale) - after all, according to South Park its a well known fact that the last thing you do before you die is physically poo your pants.... or at least that's what happened to Chef!

I do not fear death and neither should you. Three hundred years before the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, Epicurus taught us how to view death.
“Accustom yourself to the belief that death is of no concern to us, since all good and evil lie in sensation and sensation ends with death. Therefore the true belief that death is nothing to us makes a mortal life happy, not by adding to it an infinite time, but by taking away the desire for immortality. For there is no reason why the man who is thoroughly assured that there is nothing to fear in death should find anything to fear in life. So, too, he is foolish who says that he fears death, not because it will be painful when it comes, but because the anticipation of it is painful; for that which is no burden when it is present gives pain to no purpose when it is anticipated. Death, the most dreaded of evils, is therefore of no concern to us; for while we exist death is not present, and when death is present we no longer exist. It is therefore nothing either to the living or to the dead since it is not present to the living, and the dead no longer are.” ― Epicurus, Letter to Menoeceus |
