For some reason I've never really been interested in handicap betting. Hence my unbelievably amateurish question about it:

Is the stake always returned if the winning margin exactly covers the handicap. I.e. if you back Arsenal -1 and they win 1-0, do you get your stake back, with standard bookies, Betfair etc.

Apologies again for my idiocy but 'tis better to ask a stupid question on Chit Chat than lose loads of money, as my grandmother used to say.

Ah! Is that the difference between handicap and Asian handicap (stake refunded with Asian handicap)?
Report PatraTheCat • February 1, 2015 3:45 PM GMT
Seriously, someone on Chit Chat must know the answer to this one.

Sorry Patra, can't help, I don't gamble much but I'd also be interested to know.

With the example you have given the bet would be settled as a loser.
Report Shrewd_dude • February 1, 2015 8:41 PM GMT
Your 2nd post is correct.

If your bet was on the Asian handicap there is only two outcomes so your bet would be a draw and your money would be refunded. If you bet just the handicap then your bet would lose as this has three outcomes including a draw.

Cheers. Understood.

Yep -1 is a Handicap & would be money back , that's why Asian handicaps are -1.5 -2.5 (which I prefer) as you either win or lose Patra

Some Asians also offer more diverse markets like -1 + -1.5 where you can win or lose half your stake , but not many people bother with those tbh
Report Mc Moonbeam • February 1, 2015 9:13 PM GMT
sorry I meant as said above a 1-0 win on a -1 Handicap the aggregate score would be 1-1 so settled as a loser Blush
Report Mc Moonbeam • February 1, 2015 9:16 PM GMT
it's essentially the same bet but if you shop around the better price will usually be with the -1.5
Report PatraTheCat • February 1, 2015 9:18 PM GMT
Aha! That could come in useful. Cheers, Mooners.

Actually the answer is Not All markets offer a Draw ,  Patra

that's the difference with an Asian

so with the draw included in a Handicap it'd be a loser , without a draw it'd be money back , and -1 price would be slightly lower than the -1.5

so always check markets carefully Happy

a tip for you though , if you're actually backing Arsenal -1 or -1.5  have a saver on the 1-0 correct score.

Football betting is tough to beat the Handicaps longterm

I was betting a few American football Handicaps earlier this year where margins can be more interesting

Think Arsenal might be in thrashing mode for a bit, though. Actually, isn't it generally this time of year when the decent teams (Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal...) all start putting runs together?

I did back the Arsenal handicap but stupidly lost it all on the Southampton handicap, which is what has me thinking this way...
Report Mc Moonbeam • February 1, 2015 11:31 PM GMT
Yep I wouldn't disagree with you about time of the season to start but Arsenal are expected to thrash almost any team , it's just the way they play

Personally I'd rather back Chelsea or Man city

it all depends on the value you think you're getting with a Handicap but def wouldn't put you off it if you stick to every game against low-mid ranked teams

I don't take sports betting too seriously, but really feel I fecked up backing Soton.

Didn't see Man U this weekend, but I could see Liverpool and especially Arsenal putting a run together while the likes of Soton and W Ham fall apart. It's just that time of year...

I 've done a lot of this kind of betting , as the Premiership is only really about the Top teams & the Bottom teams , so you really want to be sticking to Chelsea, City or Arsenal for Handicaps (like the plan though so stick with it if that's what you feel) another thing though is I'd only stick to Home wins so that'd narrow your bets down a fair bit , plus it wouldn't pay to back them against other top teams , so maybe draw a limit at Tottenham (London derby)

after all that it wouldn't leave you with lots of betting opportunities but you'd be better off just betting bigger when it pays to , plus obv Prices might also be shorter in future , what price was the handicap today , around 1.74 ish I'd guess Cool
Report PatraTheCat • February 2, 2015 12:46 AM GMT
I got 1.80. Not a bad guess.

The thing is that Chelsea and Man C are always so short and they seem to keep slipping up...
Report Mc Moonbeam • February 2, 2015 1:01 AM GMT
yep true , City aren't quite the team they were last 2 years so haven't been following them much lately

Arsenal would be a good team to back as they usually score quite heavily , but can also let you down at times , also forget about a 1-0 saver , a few quid on 2-1 is what I used to do as that way you expect a couple of goals but get your money back with a slight mishap

I actually backed under 3.5 goals in the arsenal game after the 1st goal , which touched 1.14 in the market

Handicaps can make you sweat a bit as goal usually come late Happy
