Thanks Slippy. Trust you are well, pal.

Gerrard a more skilful player but Keane was much more influential.
Keane gets my vote |

By:
Keane. And anyone who disagrees is a red-nosed twot..
|
|
By:
Howdi, Ferguson always said Peter Schmeichel and Eric Cantona were his best ever signings but Keane must be third on the list.

"Take that you ****" as the fella once said.

More I think about it, more I think its so hard as Keane played in a better team, for most of their careers.

Keane my idol before i seen messi, but gerrard for me
|
|
By:
Easily Keane. Winning mentality.
|
|
By:
Keane was not a very talented footballer. Almost every aspect of his game was limited, however like many successful people he lacked the self knowledge to realise this. There have been many hundreds of better players over the last 20 years.
|
|
By:
easily Keane
can't stand Gerrard & his screwed up (i just **** myself) miserable scouse face ! |
|
By:
Keane, clearly - could dominate at midfield at the highest level on sometimes strong / sometimes average Ireland sides. Gerard got the runaround at international level, embarrassing at times.
|
|
By:
Indeed Wallflower, made 2 mistakes at the World Cup last year that sent us packing. A top player at club level, obviously.
Roy Keane. |
|
By:
didn't Fergie say he always found Gerard's status to be totally overrated. Lets face it most scousers are overrated because scousers by and large shout louder than most.
|
|
By:
He cost Liverpool the title last year. The one time in 25 years they genuinely had a chance and he single handedly fked it up.

If Keane, at the same stage of his career as Gerrard, had been in the Liverpool midfield last year they'd have won the league.

tragic Manc fans or football f*ckwits on this thread. Gerrard by a country mile the better player. Keane had the luxury of playing in superb Utd sides; Gerrard has helped very average LFC sides over-achieve - inc. an LFC side winning the European Cup that had Jimmy Traore in it. Not his fault that he was always played out of position by that idiot Sven Goran E, & asked to play beside Fat Frank who shouldn't have been anywhere near the side. Cost LFC the league last season - what an absurd, jaundiced view. His play & crucial goals were the reason LFC got so close to winning the league. The error was made by Rodgers who should have accepted a 0-0 given Chelski shut up shop with 9 men behind the ball & backed the side to win their last 2 remaining games. Gerrard's goals, passing range, vision, assists far superior to anything Keane was capable of, & actually in his pomp Gerrard was as good a ball winner as Keane.

The simple fact is that Keane had no greater natural ability than hundreds of players. There was no element of his game that was better than even those playing semi-professional football. Surprisingly this is not as unusual as you might think. He didn`t score goals, never beat players, was unimaginative in his passing and general play.
He did however have reasonable ability in tackling and was a good if one dimensional leader. He certainly had qualities that helped and inspired other more gifted players around him....however he was a water carrier when all is said and done. |

Ha ha, is that true? Keano just gone up in my estimation. A song so good I once named myself after it. |

Anyone who doesn't appreciate Keane's technical ability, doesn't really understand football imo. You don't play CM for United for a decade if you are not technically excellent. A decade in which he played against the very best, domestically and in Europe and shone. Won the lot, admired by everyone he played with and against. Not one of whom have said he was technically limited. You cannot rant at teammates at somewhere like United if you, yourself, are technically lacking. Sooner or later you would be called on it. The above video is a good example. Under pressure from players like Davids and Zidane, in tight spaces, he had the ability to control the ball, and not only retain possesion but frequently pass it forward intelligently to those better positioned. A masterclass. Positional intelligence, a picture in his head and the technical ability to win the ball, retain it and attack with it. No wonder the Juventus president told Fergie to name his price and he would pay it for Keane in aftermath of the above game. Technical ability is not all about playing the Hollywood ball every second pass (with limited results in case of Gerrard). Its also about being intelligent enough to dictate the tempo of a game as required, one of a few reasons why so many top coaches never trusted Gerrard in CM. Keane was lucky to have Scholes beside him, an even better passer of the ball. Keane recognised this and happily gave him the ball for Scholes to shine. Playing for the ROI he was not blessed with such riches, and it was then you saw the full compliment of his passing ability. And it was top notch. |

Gerrard all day long, keane was an up and down player who stuck a boot in, Gerrard actually knew how to play
|

Brilliant post ozy. Glad someone called lfc up on that daft post.

By:
Totally neutral here. It is Keane all day long.

brilliant post oz.
The comparison you put up with how he played with ireland was spot on. One of the most underrated players ever. Hard to believe himself and scholes were the heartbeat of united yet the vastly inferior celebrity team mate beckham was getting nominated for world player of the year. ![]() |
