Almost 500 newly identified cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) were reported by hospitals across England in one month, according to the latest figures.

An average of 15 cases were discovered each day in November, according to data published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC).

Last November 466 cases of FGM were identified; while in October, the first month such figures were compiled, 455 cases were reported. The figures for December are expected this week.

Despite the apparently high number of FGM cases, no one has yet been convicted for the practice, which has been illegal in the UK since 1985.

Dhanuson Dharmasena is currently on trial accused of performing FGM on a patient at the Whittington hospital in north London, it is the first prosecution of its kind.

'On a patient' should surely read 'on a victim'

Of course, one should always bear in mind that this fine example of the joys of multiculturalism is nowhere near as important as the need to prevent young women exposing their bosom of their own free will in a newspaper which people are free not to buy.

the feminist lobby is nowhere near as vocal as it should be on this subject. But apparently there are some that have a "multicultural feminist perspective," so back to the safer ground of Page 3 and breast feeding demos it is. Plain

Given their customary joyless bitterness, one would have thought most of them might have undergone the procedure themselves.

What about MGM?  Always surprised that this is so common place with barely any complaints about cruelty.  Circumcising young boys is disgusting imo.

Hardly the same as regards lifelong consequences though rob.

Still an obscene, stone age practice which has no place in modern Britain.

Take your child to A&E with a few suspect injuries and you'll have a lot of questions to answer but it's ok take a child in who has obviously suffered FGM.
When a health official was asked on radio why these cases are not reported he said it was culturally delicate so from that we must assume that there are some UK residents who are immune from UK laws.

I recall chatting to a pal 10+ years ago who had moved to the Luton area..

His wife was pregnant and I asked if he knew the sex of the baby.

'No, our hospital won't tell us and we can't request a specific scan for this anymore.

The Asians were previously using scans to identify the gender so that they could get an abortion if it was a girl.'

How come they have the time and money to carry out these operations? Thought the NHS was skint No wonder AE departments are in chaos

a sensible secular society would criminalise FGM and circumcision on minors where there was no clear medical need for the procedure to be carried out prior to the child reaching the age of consent. It really is that simple; it's a basic principle of medical ethics that you don't operate on people unless there's a need to do it.

(and before any of the penile cancer, HIV arguments come out, would you also want all your daughters proto-breast tissue resected at birth if she carried the BRCA2 gene? - or do you think that's a decision you might want to leave to her)

you can't go chopping off bits of your children's bodies, or getting someone else to do it on your behalf, because of some hokey old superstitious mumbo-jumbo.

the reason we get ourselves into so much trouble and confusion is the hypocrisy in allowing ethically equivalent transgressions for some people and not for others and it is nearly always down to "religious and cultural sensitivities" and the ridiculous exemptions they seem to permit.

We need a set of modern ethical and secular principles and you can stick everything else up your jacksie.

Doctors to be struck off for ignoring FGM

Doctors, nurses and teachers face the sack if they fail to report cases of children with female genital mutilation under a new law announced by the Government yesterday (thursday).

Ministers are to put health care professionals, including social workers, under under a mandatory duty to report cases of FGM on girls under 18.

The new duty will operate when the abuse is disclosed by the victim herself or discovered during a medical examination.
Health care professionals including doctors, midwives, social workers and teachers, will have a month in which to report the abuse to the police.

I'm sure an army of Human Rights Chancer Lawyers will be on red alert right now, ready to mount some fatuous legal challenge to preserve the Human Rights of stone age savages to continue butchering young women with impunity in this country.
