A Yorkshire family who claim £50,000 in benefits every year are complaining that they do not get enough in state handouts.
The family, which spans three generations, receive thousands a month in benefits payments. But according to a Channel 5 documentary, they say they should be entitled to even more money.
Many of the Kerrigan clan, who live in Sheffield, start claiming benefits as soon as they leave school, not bothering to get a job and contribute to the British economy as the people who pay their benefits have to do.
Mother of five Rose Kerrigan claims £740 a month in income and child support and says she has not been able to hold down a full time job in years.
Speaking as part of the documentary, called ‘My Big Benefits Family’, she blames the amount of money unemployed people are given for their criminal behaviour.
“I think it’s pathetic, I’ll be honest with you. This is why people go out pinching and shoplifting because they can’t live on [benefits].
“If they got enough benefits they wouldn’t need to go out and do things like that.”
But her claims did not correlate with the spending habits of her nephew Robert, who admits that he spends as much as £600 a year on trainers alone.
Far from using his money to fund essentials or follow healthy hobbies and pursuits, the 24 year old uses his state payments to maintain his three mopeds.
Despite being in his mid twenties, Robert is already a father of four and admits he uses his benefits cash to pay child maintenance to the mothers of his children.
“I think it’s all right for me really. My benefits pay my maintenance for my kids. I treat my girlfriend with clothes and trainers and that.
“I wouldn’t be bothered if I had holes in my shoes so long as my kids look nice and are healthy.
And his irresponsible attitude didn’t just stop at spending money on luxury and fashion items, saying “At the end of the day it’s my money. If I skint myself then that’s up to me.
“In the last year I’ve spent £600 on trainers,” he admitted. “The most I’ve ever spent on a pair is about £130.”
While the three generations of the family live in three separate houses, they spend much of their time together.
With an income equal to the salary a hard-working couple in a teaching or nursing job might manage to take home each year, before taxes are deducted, the Kerrigan family is sure to continue the debate on how despite reforms, choosing not to work and living off the state still manages to be a legitimate lifestyle choice for many in Britain.

Incidentally, the report fails to mention the bit about the 42" Flat screen tv, sky sports, and the xbox and PS4 the kids play with.

Loads of people complain about stuff..... no-one is actually taking any notice of these people's "complaints", except Channel 5 - who actually asked them to complain in the 1st place, or we wouldn't be reading about it - and the indignant 'righties' who like nothing better than to suggest that all benefits should be stopped because people like these are the main recipients.
It's a bit like a prisoner in for life 'complaining' that he "should get out early because he doesn't think prison is all that great" and many of the responses on this thread are a bit like, "ALL prisoners should NEVER be let out".
Labour didn't "create" this. The corporate, computer generated, advertising ridden, rich and poor only, unfair society we live in - as a result of 35 years of government selfishness (all parties) created this.
Penalising poor people (not clans like the ones in the [spurious at best] story) won't make anything any better.
Moving some money around society, allowing small business and manufacturing to succeed, paying the richest a bit less and the lowest earners/poorest a bit more will, obviously, make this sort of crap fade away.

Its not a "spurious story" it was a tv doc and whilst it was determined to show this lot in a bad light the programmers did not have to do much. This family really are a bunch of feckless useless wastrels and were quite happy to smirk on camera to confirm it.
That's why the film was made about them, dobbo.... Good TV, However I think it would be naive to think that the editing and "facts" used in the documentary weren't put together for fullest effect.
They are NOT typical on the vast majority of benefits claimants any more than the Royal Family are typical of the vast majority of well-off people.

I don't think even this programme was suggesting they are typical. But they are a bunch of parasites. It did not need clever editing it just needed a camera pointed in the right direction.

quite possibly, they are doubtlessly scuzbag chavs. It's the response of people that annoys me. It's grist for the mill of the 'stop all benefits' brigade.
A couple of things here ... firstly this is not ONE household but i think 3 just one generational family ... so thats on average £17k per household ...

My gut feeling is a journalist is safe doing this .. try looking at how Nigeria is so corrupt and cant afford to arm its soldiers to fight Boko Harem due to western oild controls and cultural sadism with those in control who take Shells / BP's money and take it for themselves .. thats real journalism and a bit tougher !

That's unfair. I think most people recognise that we have a welfare system to be proud of but they get the hump when they see it abused. Despite the atypical status of this clan the system is subject to widespread abuse. Is it so wrong for me as a self employed grafter to dislike writing cheques to the taxman for a miniscule amount of money for him but a major amount of money for me that just gets tipped into a great big hole marked :welfare ?
The tentacles of austerity seem to avoid the big business owners, lawyers, politicians, royalty, mayors, council managers, convicted murderers and paedo`s, scroungers, tax evaders, and non-Enlish speaking immigrants.
