Bought some for fun about a year ago - some breaking evens, some down and some up - just like a day at the races. In search of the 100/1 winner (Microsoft).

Limited advice on the internet unless you subscribe to some sites and then your just getting their choices, would rather make my own choices from whatever info I can find but it's scarce.

Occasionally come across a forum during random searches - Anyone know of any good artices or tips ?

I wouldn't buy penny shares because they are too easily manipulated.

I thought about these, well I did years ago after the Poseidon frenzy.
Worth a google and a read but in summary the shares jumped from under an Aussie dollar to $12.80 on a mining report.
They continued to rise despite no further info and peaked at $280 before crashing.
Made me think of the penny shares but I never did invest.  Been a while now since Poseidon so maybe the next big one is just around the corner.

Yes there are a few that do go a bit off the scale and then crash, you just have to be lucky and get out at the right moment. A guy on a forum highlighted one that went to a penny a few years ago when they were having bad times (CRN mining company), they are now back at 12p, I can only see a low of 8p but if they were 1p then he's doing alright - he must have had info as they had lost their mining license and the mine was flooded, then with some investment it all came to life again.

You want to watch a some of them.
They'll so thinly traded that once you've bought them you might not be able to sell them again.
You'll be at the mercy of the market makers who might have to give you a special price to take them off your hands, or join the queue to sell at the quoted rate.
And I'm not joking.

I think most budding traders get sucked into the market through the prospect of making a killing through buying penny shares.
Then as they watch their cash rapidly going down the drain, they either wise up and move into more stable stuff or get out of the game altogether.
Penny shares are for investors with huge portfolios who can afford the luxury of a gamble and don't care if they lose.
For most people though they're a dead loss, but then again some do get lucky.

Is it better to buy shares that lay a dividend?
I have to say that I have found two aim shares that I will invest this years bonus in.
You pay your money and take your chance.

Dr Crippen is right
Penny shares are for fantasists in search of winning the lottery

In reality every share is a Penny share , stick to trading the big blue chip companies in the FTSE100 , when they're in trouble especially

Firstly take no notice of tips or Jeremiahs.
You must have a reason for buying a specific share. If your reason is sound there will be profit.
To give yourself a safety net find the asset/share value and if this is greater than the current price per share you can consider buying. The greater the differential the better. We are talking serious assets not the variety nonsensical.
It is never wrong to take a profit but most serious investors prefer to sell half when the price doubles.
Treat the money invested as dead for the duration and do not fanny around with any less than £1000 per investment.
Have fun.

Two facts:
Buy and hold shares in a rising market and you find it hard not to make money.
Buy and hold shares in a falling market and you'll almost certainly lose money.

Abslutely xmoneyx, but that usually applies to buying shares through a fund or a savings plan where the regular purchasing of units irons out the ups and downs of the market.
You buy at the top and at the bottom.

Fast Jet up 35% today. African Potash up 30%.

There are gains to be made but you have to be careful. Good to look for companies that may be taken over by bigger fish.

When you buy a penny share you're opposing the market a bit like backing an outsider. As with betting it's all about managing the investment to a level you can afford.

Always best to look at the fundamentals of the company. Who runs them, what is their track record in management, how much debt, what external factors could help/hinder them etc.
