I accidentally left a fresh cucumber against the back of the fridge and it froze solid. Defrosted it, it's went completely to an almost liquid mush. It was only bought recently.

If freezing does that to the structure of a cucumber, surely it'd be pretty hard to preserve the integrity of your brain/body freezing it for 500 years waiting for a cure for something? I can't believe some blood antifreeze could protect more than a % of your cells.

I'm aware its not a normal freezer ;) But it's surely a similar principle, you've a physical body that is cooled from the outside, that is principally made of water. Cucumbers and humans are both mostly water, we're 90% or something?

I'm busy today to go look (not that you'd know as I'm on bloody chit chat for a few minutes Laugh) but I'm sure it's to do with the water crystalising as it freezes, and the crystals rupturing the cells walls, in a permanent way. I find it hard to believe you could do that in a way that would do some significant damage.

You'd end up severely brain damaged. If cryogenics was actually being used, that might explain some posters on the politics forum mind you LaughWhoops

Actually .. I remember reading about some frog that has some magic chemical in it to help prevent damage, that can be frozen, most animals would be massively damaged. But I wonder how you could possibly get that chemical into every cell in an animal that wasn't evolved that way..

No point in cryogenics. You won't be frozen at an age at which it will be worth coming back in the future. If you live in the UK even if cryogenics works, by the time you state you want to return Shariah Law won't allow you to be revived. And lets face it, in that case one is better dead!

that's entirely correct.

it's also why freezing meat does it no favours. the ice needles perforate the muscle tissues meaning the meat dries out much more quickly when cooked.

you need cryoprotectants to stop this happening; most of which are toxic at the levels required for a whole body.

Seriosuly though, I don't think it would work. I saw something on TV where in the US they had these freezers with peoples heads in them. I wonder have ever successfully frozen and brought back a mouse and it appeared normal?
