I think getting behind liberal secular, progressive ideas - trade union representation, women and gay rights, more liberal licensing laws, decriminalising of some drug groups, the freedom of the press, state support for the arts etc - together with an unapologetic stance on the great things the West have given the world (functioning legal systems, civil service, taxation and representation) is the way forward.

Be prepared to say our way of life is not only different, it is BETTER than the murderous Islamic fascism these savages want to foist on us.

Report Clouseau • January 8, 2015 10:44 PM GMT
Maybe I should have titled this thread: "JE SUIS CHARLIE and general observations regarding the ChitChat supreme Placepot competition"

In that way the thread can express solidarity with the victims of an Islamist terrorist atrocity which threatens the very foundations of western civilisation and freedom of expression and also gives a nod to those who have tipped up a few nags to get in the frame over the course of the season.Cry
Report SlippyBlue • January 8, 2015 10:45 PM GMT
I don't think so The Leopard, I couldn't be bothered with the aggro and last year, although it was pretty good the returns were not that brilliant to be honest given the overall stakes. My placepottery efforts in the competition suits that format quite well but as for being a tipsterer it wouldn't be too sound an investment I wouldn't have thought in the long term. Stick to the big meetings like Cheltenham, Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood where the pools are huge and the favourites are over bet, there you will find the decent dividends.

An offensive cartoon on Woman = Sexist
An offensive cartoon on Blacks = Racist
An offensive cartoon on Gays = Homophobic
An offensive cartoon on Religon = Freedom of speech
Report Larry Sellers • January 10, 2015 11:57 AM GMT
Thebetterbettor, what makes something offensive and which higher authority determines whether something is offensive or not?  An offence on occurs when someone chooses to be offended.

Your oversimplified and flawed analogy does not include the notion that merely depicting a woman in cartoon form is therefore offensive.
Report The Leopard • January 10, 2015 12:03 PM GMT
An offence only occurs when someone chooses to be offended.

and as it's a format of debate you seem to prefer, I'll let you complete this thebetterbettor:

An "offensive" cartoon on Christians = Freedom of speech
An "offensive" cartoon on Jews = Freedom of speech
An "offensive" cartoon on Hindus = Freedom of speech
An "offensive" cartoon on Islam = _________________?
Report TheBetterBettor • January 10, 2015 12:21 PM GMT
Have a look at the cartoons of the 1930s to see how they use to depict race...and now they're all censored on tv.
Report TheBetterBettor • January 10, 2015 12:28 PM GMT
An "offensive" cartoon on Jews = anti-semitic.  That's why you don't see any more of them since the 1940's

Thebetterbettor - I see plenty of recent cartoons depicting moses and poking fun at their religion. Not headline news because nobody got murdered as a result.  I should have put Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism instead of Jews Christians and Hindus.

A quick google and I found these ut I guess they are not considered "offensive" as it is a different set of rules for Islam?

I agree with 1st time poster - all this nonsense about free speech is doing my head in.

A volunteer with the Red Cross was sacked recently because he voiced an opinion opposing gay marriage.

Twitterers (mostly footballers) get fined and banned regularly for voicing an opinion.

Journos daren't give certain opinions in case their bosses send them to Outer Mongolia to cover Camel Racing.

I agree Paris was about the deaths but the debates since have focused on this mythical 'free speech'.
