This year I am taking part in the Dryathlon challenge for Cancer Research, which means I have to abstain from alcohol for the whole of January, including my birthday  Cry

I am posting this to ask my fellow chitchatters for sponsorship, my target is a fairly modest £310.00, or £10/day.

Having been a fairly hardcore drinker for the past ten years or so, this definitely represents a serious challenge for me; I have also seen the devastating effects of cancer on many loved family members & friends over the years and hope you will sponsor me to raise funds for vital research.

If you would like to help, please visit my JustGiving page:

https://www.justgiving.com/Betfair-Badger-dryathlete20152015

Thanks for taking the time to read this and Happy New Year  Happy

There seems to be a bit of a problem with your donor page. I have just tried to make a small donation but it requires me to enter my email address (so that it can confirm receipt). This is just about OK.
But then it requires me to 'open an account' and asks me to generate a password.
I don't wish to open an account. I just want to make a donation through 'Paypal'.  SadSad

I was a bit surprised that nobody seemed to have chipped in because the guys on here are a pretty good bunch. (Damn... they'll see that Laugh).

Anyway, that might be a bit of a problem...it's usually easier than this if I recall correctly.

Thank you naydam, there are now a couple of donations there, so if one of them is from you, many thanks - and if not, many thanks to the people did make them  Happy
Report naydam January 8, 2015 8:29 PM GMT
Not from me. I have no doubt that if one 'opens an account' it will be possible. I just can't see why that is necessary. Also, I can't see why it is compulsory to give one's email address. Fine, if you require confirmation of payment...but I don't. I prefer anonymity.

One can spend too much time in public glare. I can hardly leave the palace these days without a disguise.  Cool Devil Laugh

thanks anyway naydam, my page has updated now, so a big thank you to rob and brendan for getting the ball rolling... Happy

if you donate do you see our real names ?
Report naydam January 8, 2015 8:41 PM GMT
You can donate under any name you wish eg Naydam...but you need to give your full email address.
Report Clungehungry January 8, 2015 8:45 PM GMT
Good for you. I am so broke at the moment I cannot promise to contribute, but if I can I will!
Report naydam January 8, 2015 9:11 PM GMT
Scandanavian. I've just made a donation and s far as I can see you would enter your chitchat name so that Badger could post a thank you.
You are required to give your email address but can hide that from Badger before you check out. It actually asks if you want him to contact your address...

Badger must confirm if he can see our email addresses or not. This is NOT made clear and will badly affect [possible donations!
Can you please check that Mr Badger? And, of course, let us know the result of said check!  Laugh
Report scandanavian_haven January 8, 2015 9:14 PM GMT
yes can't make a contribution until I know full anonymity is given, I a vip

Many thanks also to Makybe_Diva and naydam, who finally made it through. Although Cancer Research is a well-known cause I am nonetheless quite overwhelmed by your generosity given that none of us have ever met (that I know of, anyway!)

naydam, I can see your Chitchat user names; although there might be an option to show your email address (if, for example, you wished to receive a personal reply) it certainly isn't shown by default.
Report naydam January 9, 2015 2:28 AM GMT
Thank you, Badger. That is what Scandanavian wanted to know. There is a box to tick which hides the donor's email address from you. It will preserve anonymity from the recipient. This is good! Cool  Grin

Not a good strategy Mister Badger!

The way forward is for you to stick to the booze, and get a fit and pretty daughter to run for you.....

My li'l beauty pulled down close to £1,200, plus gift aid, on two individual runs.

Despite being well hung over from celebrations the night before, she was in the top 20 finishers of 6,500.

She was the biggest individual fund raiser, with £1,165.00, which her generous employers matched with a cheque to her chosen charity.

Cue some vindictive tw@t to criticise me for talking about money again!

I thought that OTHER people were supposed to 'LoL' at your jokes. Kinda takes the gloss off when you do it yourself.
Report Dr Crippen January 9, 2015 11:07 AM GMT
No you've got that wrong as usual naydam.

When you stick a lol after a post it's just to confirm that you were joking.

Saves having to explain yourself later.

Lol.
Report naydam January 9, 2015 11:27 AM GMT
That's very interesting. Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. I shall remember that, thank you.
Report naydam January 9, 2015 11:29 AM GMT
Notice that there is no 'LoL'? That's because it's a serious 'thank you'.

See?..........I'm learning, already. Grin

Thank you Money tree, another very generous donation - although I haven't had my birthday yet, so let's not tempt providence!

I will not push this too much on here, but will ttt it at the end of each week and hope that people will continue to give - please remember, no amount is too small, and it is a hugely worthwhile cause.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far  Happy
Report naydam January 9, 2015 6:24 PM GMT
OI! You are being sponsored to REFRAIN from drinking for the month of January. You are NOT being sponsored to 'cut down a bit! Angry

You will have to celebrate your birthday in a different way or at another time. Just my opinion, of course.  Devil Happy

Just went to the "Just Giving" site, and I'm sure they are asking for more info than I ever used before!

I reckon they must scare away a hell of a lot of would be doners, who get to the final page and are nervous about giving all the info!
Report MisterBadger January 11, 2015 5:17 PM GMT
That may be to do with the gift aid AP, so the tax man can check up, not that he's got time. If in doubt don't claim gift aid and use a false name, shame to lose the extra money but at least anonymity is preserved. (The above is all supposition on my part btw).
Report naydam January 12, 2015 12:45 PM GMT

Even if you raised a galzillion pounds for cancer research, it wouldn't cure it overnight...

Its like the common cold too many variants of this evil disease.  It would take a minimum of say 50 to 100 years, until the technology is so advanced that you could develop 'nano bots' to identify and kill cancer cells before they start spreading.

Best to raise the dough for cancer care imo.

A big thank you to everybody on here who sponsored me for this - I have PM'd most of you, apart from Money Tree, who's correct forum name I can't seem to find on the system... along with my "real life" appeal, the total raised was £396, so it was well worth it - and I've saved a fair few quid on drink into the bargain!

Thanks again peeps  Love

PS If anyone wants to top the fund up, the page will stay open until 14 Feb  Wink
