Could you elaborate a little more Burton-Brewers? No worries if not, it's quite a personal thing but I like hearing other people's ideas on the matter.

The older I get, I see more of a reason to believe that there is NO higher being.
When I was a kid I was brainwashed into believing not only was there a god but a Protestant, Christian god just for me and my "people". As I've matured I can see why gods were invented but everything can be explained without one. If there is a higher being then he is very benign. I'm all ears though and if science can prove an existence then I'll gladly change my mind. |
|
By:
Yeah I see what you mean Ovalman. It can feel like a brainwashing thing. I don't really believe in religion but I believe in God or some sort of higher power.
To think our universe was all created by a sheer fluke OUT OF NOTHING some 13 billion years ago also sounds like rubbish to me too though that's my problem. |

Aasbff does God interfere with your live when you win at gambling, or is it just when you lose that he trys to guide you down the right path.

I think BOTH Make my hay.
I won about £230 the other day and normally I'd be proper buzzing and telling my mates about it and giving it large. Instead I was just very subdued about it all and just mentioned it briefly. To me it just feels like your filling a void for a certain amount of time. The same reason people drink, do drugs, sleep with loads of women etc. It's all come to the surface for me in the last few months but been building up for a couple of years or so... |
|
By:
I think if you're making money then God should mind his own business and not make you feel down about it.
|
|
By:
aasbff - what you are experiencing is all part of growing up. Happened to me when I was around 35. Life is all about making choices, hopefully you can make the right ones.
As for a higher power, forget it. IMHO God is highly overrated, whenever I have needed his intervention (parents divorce, friends cancer, grandparents illnesses) he has always failed to deliver |

I agree I also had similar views in my mid 20's .. then something kind of takes over you as you realize how cruel the world actually is
It was about that age I started to become seriously depressed & went through a kind of terrible remorse about my life .. everything I'd done bad / wrong / and how much of a better person I wanted to be instead I'm still on the wrong track I feel but I'd say always listen to your inner self conscious speaking out to you .. it's a kind of built in mechanism we have to guide & protect ourselves from danger ![]() |

By:
Yeah but why am I coming to these conclusions all of a sudden? That seems to be people's main reason for not believing, all the suffering in the world.
Have you ever heard of a guy called CS Lewis? I've been watching a few of his videos of late and he try's to explain things as simple as possible or in layman's terms about the world. He makes perfect sense to me at least. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJu0oYvi-cY |

It seems that everyone seems to reach a point in their life where there at like a crossroads and deciding which path to go down. Exactly Mc Moonbeam, to me that is something given to you by a higher being. Something which the human brain is unable to fully explain.
|
|
By:
Nope! Like Ovalman I was raised very closely to the Church of Wales (CofE's smaller nephew)as church-lads brigade/choir-boy/sunday-school teacher/communion server/relief organist etc. but decided late teens there were no substance or foundation to 'faith'.. and nothing has changed my view since.
Consider myself fortunate I've not had the periods of self-doubt and wonder that Moonbean and aasbff refer to - just play with the cards I've been dealt really. |

No , I didn't mean the suffering is why I don't believe , as I did when I was younger & was bought up as Catholic (not a strict one but went to church when younger etc)
I also started to read lots of self help books , though youtube is very good nowadays I'm not sure about given to you by a higher being , the human brain is actually The Most Complex Computer there will ever be on this planet , it's immense what it's actually capable of though a lot of it will be going on in your Subconscious mind & you're probably not even aware of how to interpret what it's telling you as you haven't yet 'logged in' to read what it's giving out ![]() |

I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.

That's brilliant Burton-Brewers, I take it that line is from the bible? Yeah the mind is VERY complicated but brilliant at the same time, which again for me, points to a higher force.
I used to go church when I was at my C of E Primary School and was at my happiest at this point. I then fell out with my best mate in the last year over nothing and my life hasn't been the same since. Kind of gradually gone off course after not really finding anything I was interested in. I'm also currently not working, which may have something do with my self - esteem. I've worked in Retail (hated it, didn't believe I belonged there) so tried working in an office. (also hated it and sat at the computer screen thinking I don't belong here yet again) The only thing that has interested me since I have got older is the BIG questions in life and watching Sport, mainly Horse Racing and Football. Women too but they don't seem to like nice guys! |

Rather than believe in a higher power, I appreciate the milk of human kindness that occasionally penetrates an otherwise aphotic society.

I haven't read all the replies so probably repeating some. To me it's your conscience giving you a wake up call.
We are taught/brainwashed from an early age to believe in a loving god who is omnipresent. As I grew older I started questioning that and asked myself what type of god would allow all the suffering that there is in the world? Babies born in Africa only to die a long and painful death through malnutrition. Babies born with no senses of any kind. Babies born with terrible deformities. Started not to look like the kind of god, if there is one, that I was taught to believe in. So I went from .... And God created man to And Man created god. |

^ Thank feck I'm not religous, seriously people wasted their lives following nonsense that was written 2000 odd years ago ![]() |

That's the thing, I want to be a proper religious person because I love the idea of most of it. To me what is life about? LOVE. And what is love? GOD. However, there's reason to doubt it which is giving me conflicting views/emotions.
Can't get away from the fact that imo, there's 'more to it than meets the eye' though. |

If you look at the animal kingdom, the meaning of life is all about surviving and reproducing. Only in the modern human world do we complicate things. Lies, bullshit and hypocrisy is rife. Better to sleep on a pile of bricks than suck up to the devil.

You can lead a good life and care for humanity without having a god in your life. I think we all strive or strove for that but then you meet one of life's bastard and become cynical again. ![]() |

I was never a firm believer as a child & completely rebelled in my teens (got locked up age 17)
I've never read a bible in full but there are some priceless lessons & phrases quoted from it And God created man to And Man created god. What he's saying imo is there's a kind of ever flowing life force that's all available to everybody if we choose to use it wisely , every man is his own God if he chooses to be I tend to think total non believers don't actually belive in anything , let alone the most important thing , themselves ![]() |

A little bit of me hopes the christian god exists who supposedly watches us,gives us free will etc, just so I can tell him what a grade a tw@t he is

Yeah I agree with you on that CLYDEBANK29 but the human mind is exactly that, more complicated. Why should it be more complicated?
A lot of people become famous, sleep with loads of beautiful women, have loads of money YET still end up going off the rails. You speaking from experience MadVlad? ![]() |

God is a figment of the imagination, like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. It's nicer to live in a fantasy world, but you have to be a committed fantasist to realise that euphoric state.

I believe in something but religion has caused a helluva lot of very bad things to happen, and still does, and that's getting WORSE not better which is extremely depressing. It's quite probable that there is some form of supernatural but NONE of the religions have ever got it even 1/100th right as to what it is. Think about that for a minute.
What I'm 100% damned sure is to what it's not, and it's not what sick b*stards of various religions do and have done in "his name". |

What is a total unbeliever? Something or someone created us otherwise we wouldn't be but is it a god as we are taught or merely a chemical accident. If it was a someone, ie a god, then it is a god who created us and then moved on to let us live our lives as we want. Whatever it was I give it little thought other than when I see threads like this on here or the few occasions I go to the Kirk. |

By:
Agree about the animal kingdom , when I feel low watching David Attenborough or the like really cheers me up , they live to live , to hunt , to love & protect & survive , like we would do if we weren't all money slaves to the elite .. but just tell me where the hell they all came from in the first place ....
|

By:
"And God created man to And Man created god."
What he means is that Man created God not the other way round, like Man created Gandalf and Paddington the Bear. |

a total unbeliever , there must be tons on here aka
To me it's somebody that Totally Diminishes any belief but can never answer anything in return . Basically they Don't believe in Anything (unlikely to believe in themselves either) |
