My feelings exactly,why should people who have the sense not to buy property where it's liable to be flooded subsidise thase daft bats who buy property in such locations through higher insurance premiums?

No chance. Cameron and the Tory filth announced a week or two ago that every single property, no matter how big its pricetag or how wealthy its owners, will be guaranteed insurance against flooding thanks to a compulsory surcharge of £10.50 on everyone else's home insurance premiums.

This Government has one single policy: to ensure that the cost of putting a roof over your head remains so stratospherically high that anyone without an inheritance is committed to a lifetime of debt slavery.

If the price of a riverside property were allowed to fall, then people with ingenuity rather than inheritance might buy them and transform them with lime plaster, elevated electrical sockets, tiled floors, portable fittings etc. and make them habitable at an affordable price. A nightmare scenario to a Tory.

the only thing i would say about inheritence is that in the south of england the 325k threshold at which IHT is chargeable leaves very little for inheritors particularly if they have to share with their southern siblings (they are better than those with no inheritence of course, i do concede that)

Yeah, I've been baffled about the amount of media coverage for a traffic jam in France.

Probably useful as a timely warning to British motorists. Check your car's condition and equipment levels for winter. Carry some warm clothing, water and food. Set off earlier to reach your destination. Learn how to drive up hills in snowy/icy conditions. Etc, etc, etc.
None of which will be done by any British drivers and chaos will rule again.

I actively looked for properties which had I knew had suffered flooding down here in Somerset and were on the market. I found one which had suffered from surface flooding (i.e. needs drainage work and, just as importantly, needs the drains and gutterings to be maintained, even those not specifically on the property - something most modern property owners refuse to do, either out of idleness, ignorance or because they reckon the pitifully low council tax which high-end homeowners pay should cover it).

It had been refurbished with what looked through the window like new wallpaper and a new fitted kitchen, presumably out of the insurance, but still had buddleia growing out of a downpipe and a roadside ditch like a rainforest. The asking price was still one I could never imagine being able to meet.

Riverside properties are a bit more of a problem, because the Environment Agency actively discourages water management out of a mistaken belief that leaving rivers to, like, nature sort of like helps water voles (it doesn't - they need a known high-water mark to prevent their tunnels from flooding). You face years of legal battles before being allowed to dredge and landscape a river bend. But surface water flooding can usually be tackled on your own by actively looking for silted-over old drains in your backyard, ripping up hardstanding and patios and digging leaves out of the roadside gutters.

If you then remove modern cement rendering, gypsum plaster, wallpaper/oil-based paints and "damp-proofing" and replace with the lime and limewash which older properties had originally and through which water can evaporate, then your building can recover from any water ingress that does occur. Plus common-sense tile floors, shoulder-high electrical fittings, moveable furnishings etc.

Or you can just appear on the news every couple of years demanding that something should be done and rely on that nice Mr Cameron to get everyone else to pay for a new interior every couple of years.
