Mcilroy a worthy fav and should win but the biggest scandal is the omission of Sam Burgess. Take away Mcilroy and Hamilton and he's a good case to be 3rd fav but the BBC didn't even find a place for him in the ten!
No bets here dewey. Too busy losing it on handball, the Peruvian fourth division and elevator squash. Had my nuts on World Champ Lifti Shafti but he lost.

It's about who's motivated to vote not who deserves to win. Hamilton was the 2nd most deserving anyway. He secured the ride in the Mercedes because of his talent. No different in that respect to Tony McCoy. In this country we like to vote for people who sit on their arse.

Mr Eboue - 'Lewis Hamilton won Sports Personality with 209,920 votes, more than 80,000 ahead of runner-up Rory McIlroy. 620,932 votes cast' - 'I' am not in the least surprised at that.

The voting figures have been released and they're incredible. Just 620,932 votes were cast. With all the fuss that's made I was expecting it to be around the 2 or 3 million mark at least. Lewis received just over a third (33.8%), so two-thirds didn't vote for him.

This show (not programme) has now become the last-word in 'up-the-ar$e' pretension, with only X-Factor to rival it for bombast.
Whether it's Gary Lineker still trying to cut it as a stand-up comedian (word Gary. You can't do 'deadpan' so stop trying and when I say trying I mean 'breathing')to Eddie Butler reprising Gielgud's Lear at Stratford in '52 (his eulogy to Phil Hughes moved me to tears, dahling), the whole thing screams 'Please give me a BAFTA award'.
It wouldn't be so bad if you actually got to saw meaningful footage of those great sporting moments of the year. Instead though you're given fast-cut, worms-eye action sequences that appear to have been done by first year design students on acid let loose on editing software and PowerPoint for the first time.
Throw in the painfully 'right-on' nominations and the fact that as BBC Sport only cover F1 now (the petrolhead demographic being their key constituency now apparently) the Theo Walcott / Andros Townsend lovechild had to win it, lest the whole Emperors new clothes F1-as-interesting-sport artifice crumbled to the floor, you have a turn-off greater than Sam Alladyce in a gimp mask

Indeed Roger, it's transformed from one of my favourite shows as a kid to a complete sell out pretentious love in. Would have given you 1000/1 that i'd be watching xfactor instead of it 10 years ago but that's how bad it's become. (I only had xfactor on because I had a bet on it I must add)
I did switch it on for 5 minutes, only to see the Woman's Rugby Team claim the team award ahead of the Ryder Cup and the Mercedes team. Truly farcical. Completely in-line with this nonsensical promotion of Women's sport that's happened this year though.

Trouble with the beeb is that instead of looking down on ITV, X-Factor and sneering. They copy it. Imo that is not what the beeb is for, People who want to watch sh1t tv have ITV for that precise purpose.

I love sport and with only having terrestrial tv I watch almost everything to do with sport shown on it - but I very much doubt I will ever again tune into SPOTY.
That was an embarrassment, BBC.
You should hang your heads in shame for turning out such a trite load of absolute twaddle.

- and Sam Allardyce in a gimp mask is preferable to Clare Balding any day.
Book him (and his mask) next year for the main presenting role - and it will get you far more viewers. At least he knows a bit about sport.

messi won the 2012 world player of the year but 59% of people didn't vote for him, not sure that means anything
It reduces the credibility of a vote if the majority of the voters didn't choose the winner. For every voter who thought Lewis should win, two voters didn't think he should win.

Just too much celebrity b.ollox. We don’t turn up at the bafta’s and start practising our golf swing, or insist on stopping the Brit’s awards so we can have a little game of keepy uppy. This should be our night – sports lovers’ night. But oh no got to get some ethnic music in and a fat comedian to add a bit of glamour. People that want that should have been watching the X Factor.

You must have made a mistake when you cited him as a comedian? One of the many comedian mainstream TV comedians who have never once made laugh and I like a laugh, the best comedians out there imo don't really do TV. I think the show has clearly lost its relevance, Ronaldo won the overseas award, I doubt he could care less

oi oi it is scandinavian haven. Do you remember when you were saying Lewis Hamilton is unpopular because he is black? How do you explain last night then, for me winning 2 golf majors trumps an F1 title. What with Rory Mac being white too he should have been nailed on.

Do you remember when you were saying Lewis Hamilton is unpopular because he is black?
yes, but not the sole reason, with a lot of people though it's true, but I didn't say he wouldn't win this because he was black because from past shows including talent shows there has been black winners, I am surprised Mcilroy didn't win because his achievement was greater.

I haven't spoken to a single person who didn't think the whole thing was just cringingly awful. The biggest mistake the BBC have made, has been to turn what used to be an unmissable review of the sporting year into a glitzy celebrity obsessed awards show, with the actual sport acting as a mere backdrop for the stories/interviews/montages.
I don't think there was more than about 5-10 minutes of sporting action last night. Eg, the whole Premier League season was condensed into less than 3 seconds - "Manchester City won the title again".
I don't buy it that the BBC haven't got the sport to show. They covered the six nations, world cup, commonwealth games, grand national, Open championship & masters, London marathon and Diamond League, rugby league, Premier & League football, snooker, darts, cycling etc etc. But it seems preferable to them to conform to their all-inclusive stereotype to showcase women's and disabled sports to a disproportionate degree for fear of being labelled discriminatory.
Older viewers will remember the days when it was a simple sporting review (about 5-10 minutes per sport) with a few laughs thrown in, and culminating with an award for the sports person of the year. Overseas and team awards were a later, and welcome, addition.
But now it is so bloated with 8 awards, plus the constant iteration of how to cast your vote, doesn't leave much time for any action in two hour broadcast. The last few years have reached some awful lows; Miranda Hart presenting awards, lifetime achievement award for Becks at aged 36, laughable winners like Zara Philips and Ryan Giggs, awards for the likes of Eddie Izzard and David Walliams for undertaking sporting charity feats which, whilst impressive, have no place among elite sport.
The same fate has befallen another once much loved sporting favourite, A Question of Sport. A nauseating "entertainment" evolution of a once great sporting quiz.
I promised not to watch again, after despairing a few years ago, but feel perversely compelled to watch this annual car crash, almost so that I can rant about how awful it has become.
The BBC should either do it properly or not bother at all. The sad thing is, they'll be sat in their offices today slapping each other on the back over a job well done, utterly unaware that true sports fans feel almost betrayed by them.

I've been thinking and SPOTY could almost be an analogy of Betfair in the last few years.
Have a great product that sports fans really love - and then change it, just because "we can".
There are now so many people in serious business positions buying into the hype of 'what can we do to change what people want?' and how they 'should move forward'.
As Paul Calf would say "Bag o' shiiite".
Listen to real people and what they want. You'll be very surprised at the simplicity most desire.

Its the Cricket and Rugby World cups next year. Expect SPOTY to treat them as equal to the womens football WC, and the Gay Olympics.

Danno - excellent post. Totally agree. I really used to look forward to Sports Review of the Year, but I hate what it's become. Someone on the night described it as a spoof and that sums it up. All of the faults - celebrity obsession, self-promotion, arrogance and political correctness - confirm every stereotype about the BBC. Right down to the back-slapping you mention.

I caught the end of BBC Breakfast this morning. They were slapping themselves on the back talking about how a Question of Sport is celebrating some sort of longevity record and what a success it is. Bill Turnbull introduced the segment with something like, "there are Olympic Gold medals and world championships, but many sports people don't feel they've really made it until they've appeared on A Question of Sport."
He was being serious. WAC.
