Mcilroy a worthy fav and should win but the biggest scandal is the omission of Sam Burgess. Take away Mcilroy and Hamilton and he's a good case to be 3rd fav but the BBC didn't even find a place for him in the ten!

Had to google him, not a Rugby fan so unsure of the significance of what he's done in the last year, but Golf and F1 I do follow.
I think McIlroy rightly deserves it, Hamilton as good as he is, was realistically only one of two that could win, whereas Rory is directly competing against hundreds of others on a level playing field and to win two majors in a year and have a pretty flawless world championship is worthy of the win, think he's probably a lot more popular that Lewis, though not a fan of his personality myself. |

Any vote that is decieded by public vote is up for manipulation by devoted supporters. How else did Ryan Giggs win it, its not a lifetime achievement award.

The last two F1 winners didnt win SPOTY. Lewis was unlucky in 2008 in that he was up against two good candidates... Chris Hoy and Rebecca Addlington. In 2009 button was up against, iirc, a darts player and Ryan Giggs. Where were the petrol heads then?

Virtually all regular winning specials punters are already on Hamilton. That's why he's been shortening. A lot of them are cowards though so will have laid off.
I think Hamilton will probably win, but actually I don't think its a done deal, like it was when McCoy and Cavendish won. Just thought this thread needed some balance. Golf fans generally don't vote, petrolheads always do. Hamilton is the first GB double F1 champion for 41 years and he won 11 races this year, which has been bettered by only 2 other drivers. He got 167k votes when he was 2nd to Hoy and 122k votes when he was second to Calzaghe, a year when he didn't even win the drivers championships. There are plenty of people that think Hamilton deserves to win. Rory finished 8th when he was 3rd fave for this, the year Cavendish won I think |

It is TV sport's annual lowlight, a chunder inducing orgy of self aggrandizement by the BBC, who couldn't give a gnat's knacker about sport for 364 days of the year. Whoever wins the award should refuse to accept it.

As far as golf goes. Darren Clarke was 1/5 the year Zara Philips won in 2006. He was fave with a month to go in 2011 when Cavendish won with 4 times the number of votes. In 2010 Graeme McDowell and Tony McCoy were neck and neck in the betting a month before the event. McCoy got 50% of the vote McDowell wasn't even in the top 3.
Of course McIlroy is a different kettle of fish, so I respect his chances. This isn't just an annual award, it's as much if not more a lifetime achievement award (Giggs McCoy Calzaghe Cavendish) and the most important factor is motivation to vote. It remains to be seen who is the most motivated. With golf doing so poorly, there is more motivation than normal for McIlroy, given that this year will be hard to emulate. With Hamilton its a more a lifetime recognition gig I think. Game on. Far from a done deal anyway. |

Both Darren and Zara were 100/1 in July. Ricky Hatton Steven Gerrard and Joe Calzaghe were faves. Think it was the year there was a huge punt on David Walliams into fave

No one could accuse me of not being a fan of sport fenway. But I do find it fascinating. The night itself is not the same as before when it was an actual "sports Review of the year". The winner normally deserves it from my experience. Giggs and Zara being notable exceptions in the last decade or so. |

there has always been rumours it is fixed. I suppose many of you will not have heard of Bob Nudd, he was world angling champion god knows how many times. One year the Angling Times ran a campaign to get all it's readers to vote for him, remember angling is/was the biggest sport in the UK and he was supposed to have had over 200k votes. Don't think he came in the top 3.

It was the last year I lost on this primarily because I got myself into an ante post mess. From memory Walliams was taking out 33% of the book, but rather than lay him I backed everyone I thought had a realistic chance of winning as the to back percentage was like 92% or summat similar. Suffice to say at that time neither Darren Clarke or Zara Philips even entered my head

Think Bob Nudd was in the days of a postal vote and the BBC simply disqualified the votes. It's all above board now. The only fix is the shortlist, which has to be PC after 2011. OFCOM for one would be on the case if there was owt dodgy

This used to be such a class programme, and definately the highlight of the sporting year that everyone looked forward to, especially the great chat between Gragam Hill and Jackie Stewart. I'll still watch it, mind.
