Setting myself a task of learning one bass line a day, hopefully completing the entire song in one day, but realistically it may be 2 a week. See how it goes.
So this time next year i will know at least 100 bass lines. Some of the blues lines like Green Onions are already down, so no 12 bar shuffles unless they are interestingly unique.
Some may take a only an hour and some a week. Anything by John Entwistle will take longer because he played the bass like he was a genius but i can get the root down and progress over time.

Well this (probably) isn't what you want but I love it as a bass track on one of the finest Led Zep songs, this is exquisite bass playing from JPJ - Ramble On

yep, time is key, despite what anyone says, there are very few, if any natural musical geniuses who master an instrument in a few weeks... Ive been playing guitar for over 20 years and really am just a novice compared to most who have played it as long as I have. Recently I have thought about buying a bass and giving it a go, seems a lot simpler!!

Well i guess it`s the same for me, been noodling on the guitar for 15 years but find myself playing bass runs on it naturally, so i feel like i have a head start with the bass. Obviously timing is essential and you need to be hitting the one beat with the drummer so you are really laying down the road for the rest of the band. If the drummer is the driver of the band the bass player needs to be laying down the road as they all travel.
I play harmonica as well so that is a free expression type of instrument to fill gaps. Not like the bass which is a polar opposite.

James Jameson was probably the most remarkable bass player of the 20th century because he picked with only one finger. Definitely one to put on your list.

A couple of replies have mentioned Muse - Hysteria.... good luck with that! I play bass, fairly decently, but can't get to grips with that one. Rhythm Stick... Blockheads, Norman Watt-Roy has to be one of my favs. Anything by Pink Floyd is manageable... Comfortably Numb is a piece of peeesss, gl.

Yes AA..the blockheads were a top bunch, Mickey Gallagher would also have some credits on the Sandinista! while his children, believe it or not, sing lead vocals on one of the tracks
Paul Simonon is probably the coolest bass player that ever lived, but let's be charitable and say he probably wasn't the best
