Terrible and mercenary incompetence from all concerned here.
My beautiful wife received a letter from some agency or other (just can't recall who now) stating that if she didn't attend for an assessment of ability to perform simple tasks, she would lose the attendance allowance that she received.
I was too upset to follow up but left it to the McMillan Nurses to do so.
Two weeks later she was gone.

as stupid as he is mendacious; and he is monumentally stupid.
the people of chingford and woodford green should hang their heads in shame.
as for that article it's worth noting that it was just a mistake which was rectified, but there are still plenty of awful stories where nothing has been reversed.

I'm sure many people who IDS has forced back to work, secretly thank him for making them pull their socks up and get back into a working routine.
Especially now Christmas is here, and they've got some spare money in their pockets to spend.

staff on zero hours wont get paid off if no work , they get told to p1ss off and come back when there is work
if your on a contract your guaranteed a wage of 37.5 hours in most works ive been in the past (rained off etc you get paid ), little difference imo

I work for myself , if I don't work I don't earn money that simple, no holiday , no sick pay no f all but I prefer it that way because the bottom line is better for me.

What's remarkable is that these erosions of workers rights and conditions of employment flourished under New Labour - the party of the working man. And what were the unions doing as well?
I think we can safely forget Labour as the party of the poor. They're more busy making people poor than helping them to get on.

I'm just not convinced by the methodology of posting single examples of inequity to make a point. Left wingers post stuff like this and right wingers post about people ripping off the benefits system - surely we need some actual stats to make up our mind (unless our minds are already made up). You'll never get a totally fair system though; unfortunately the optimal point is probably one with about as many benefit fraudsters as people being wrongly denied payments (or something like that). Reducing both to zero would be prohibitively expensive.
Like pawras, I work for myself and love it. If people don't like my work I don't get paid. It feels much better than working for a boss and is vastly superior to being on benefits (a decade and a half ago I signed on for about a month and God it was depressing). Personally I just don't feel the need of a safety net, what with the extreme laziness and f*ckwittedness of the average person. Obviously there is a need for a safety net in general, though.

It was the evil of the Thatcher government that drove people on to invalidity
Yes many people who cannot work are being forced back to work to try and drive wages ever lower
So the rich do not have to pay tax
At the moment we live in a pitiless vicious society

It’s like I was counting until Thatcher was brought into it.
On one hand I don’t agree with those who clearly aren’t capable of work being forced to do so but on the other hand you can’t have people blatantly taking the p&ss, which they do and I’ve seen first hand personally without watching sensationalist stuff like “Benefits Street”
“So the rich do not have to pay tax” At what point is someone classed the rich? The bit you forget is that the vast vast majority of people have earned their money fair and square and others have no god given right to take a chunk of it to compensate for their own failings. Too many people in this country don’t want to take off the training bra and have this false entitlement complex re other people’s money via handouts etc.
The nub of the problem is we have far less low skilled jobs that are relatively ok-ish paid compared to what we used to but just as big % of morons as ever. I would put a good chunk of that at the door of globalisation.
Ps I view new labour as traitors due to their open door immigration policy and I won’t for them ever ever ever!

A very good post by Patra. The media and its controllers always like to emphasise the extremes, whichever side they are on. Although have to agree IDS is an odious ****.
Also have worked for myself since being laid off in 1992, and have never looked back. Woke up with a stinking cold this morning but no thought of having a day off. No work, no pay.

the big thing for me leaving permi-doom at 25 was that I saw that getting ahead had at least as much to do with being a proficient ar&e licker and playing the office politics as being good at your job. Plus I couldn’t take vague wooly bullsh&t in appraisals that meant your manager could basically give you whatever score he wanted, and the stuff you actually did 90% of time didn’t feature too prominently. But my old man was self employed most of his life so it’s kind of in the blood.

You would if I ran the country..you would have no choice
We are one society, I would like to see a fair society, I would like to see everybody working, for that the government
must provide jobs at a reasonable wage for everybody(well all men)...preferably private but if not public
I would like a better society not a worse one.....otherwise what is the point of anything???????

Yeah well human nature means you’re not likely to get your way. So in your world I’d be Boxer toiling more for others than myself, yeah well you know what you can do with that.

Yeah well human nature means you’re not likely to get your way. sadly true
We are going to do it one day, you would toil for yourself and others, In fact you probably do all ready to an extent if you run a business
I believe in capitalism, but it must be controlled, not this uncontrolled monetarism

I already toil far too much for others via the punative taxes I have to pay already, so I'm always going to be in favour in reducing them. The only people who don't see them as punative are those receiving them.
