I'm an old school person, a bit old fashioned in my scruples and morals, that's a given. I have never owned a monocle nor wore a cravat for that matter. I do have a ****bund though in a wardrobe somewhere to be fair but haven't worn it for awhile. ![]() |

His wrath!
I remember all about this sort of thing from Beaky Johnson's English classes and his Shakespeare obsession. I think 'Zounds!' definitely deserves a comeback! |

My best mate became a police officer and when he was doing his traioning/probationary period not long after we'd left school, he was part of the arrest which 'bagged' Beaky for importuning in a toilet in Longton! |

You fellows might like to read the Matthew Shardlake series of thrillers by C. J. Sansom, they're full of old English words.
One I learned recently, for example, is that the jakes refers to a lavatory. Today, in Scotland, the same slang word means a tramp. |

My Chemistry teacher was Beaky Reid, his specialty was hoiking you out of your chair by the hair on your temples when you burnt the desk with the bunsen burner.

Would someone be so kind as to translate what Tommy has just said?
Very Good, EO! |
|
By:
Like the chit chat of old this, starts off with a comment about how poorly informed people can be, wanders off into spaffchat, returns to more appropriate congratulations of childbirth, a brief competition about who knows the most about Old English, and ends up with teachers called Beaky.
Outstanding. |

To call somebody a 'berk'.
I often laughed at in one the cartoons that I think was the Perishers in the Daily Mirror. Iirc Baby Grumplin' used to say 'berk' It comes from the rhyming slang 'Berkeley Hunt', which is definitely not another phrase for 'idiot'. I bet the cartoonist never knew. |
|
By:
It was indeed Baby Grumplin' who used to say "berk", CMAT, and I referred to it one night some years ago when speaking to The Mentally Unstable Doctor Huxtable Pig.
It was he who told me of the Berkeley Hunt juxtaposition - and I was horrified - as I'd never have called The Doctor a berk if I'd known! |

Have you been reading up on Bill Cosby, Tommy?
His name in his show was Dr. Cliff Huxtable. Our old forumite was TheMentallyUnstableDrHuxleyPig |
|
By:
I haven't, CMAT. I've seen a few snippets about Cosby though.
Yes, the Doctor had various amalgamations of his name. Clarky couldn't bear him, but he (The Doctor) used to make me laugh enormously! Which just goes to show that you rub along with some and not with others - and you can't just presume that someone you like others will like too. |
|
By:
I used to watch it, made me laugh.
So does the old programme 'The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air', and the Wayans Brothers programme 'My Wife And Kids'. The Wayans Brothers made the 'Scream' spoofs, which were really funny. I've tried Plebs, The Inbetweeners, Two Broke Girls, and quite a few more Yank comedies. The new ones don't make me laugh at all, apart from the Big Bang Theory, which is getting on a bit itself now. |
|
By:
No idea what to make of the Cosby stuff. My dad really liked him, he had several records of his stand up shows - from the 60s I think. They always struck me as funny and warm. The only other criticism of him before all this was that in his tv show he conformed too much to 'white' American standards, which is ridiculous, unless you think being well-educated, practising as a doctor, and wearing the odd comfy sweater is a white thing - which itself is a bit more offensive. You watched that show and you didn't think of their ethnicity, you just laughed.
There's a lot of people making accusations against him, and it doesn't look good that he paid one of them off, but decades is an awfully long time to get round to mentioning being sexually assaulted. |

Big Bang Theory has been consistently great, but does look tired now, I sadly agree.
