The CIA’s post-9/11 embrace of torture was brutal and ineffective – and the agency repeatedly lied about its usefulness, a milestone report by the Senate intelligence committee released on Tuesday concludes.
After examining 20 case studies, the report found that torture “regularly resulted in fabricated information,” said committee chairwoman Dianne Feinstein, in a statement summarizing the findings.
“During the brutal interrogations the CIA was often unaware the information was fabricated.”
The torture that the CIA carried out was even more extreme than what it portrayed to congressional overseers and the George W Bush administration, the committee found. It went beyond techniques already made public through a decade of leaks and lawsuits, which had revealed that agency interrogators subjected detainees to quasi-drowning, staged mock executions, and revved power drills near their heads.
The committee’s findings, which the CIA largely rejects, are the result of a four-year, $40m investigation that plunged relations between the spy agency and the Senate committee charged with overseeing it to a historic low.
The investigation that led to the report, and the question of how much of the document would be released and when, has pitted chairwoman Feinstein and her committee allies against the CIA and its White House backers. For 10 months, with the blessing of President Barack Obama, the agency has fought to conceal vast amounts of the report from the public, with an entreaty to Feinstein from secretary of state John Kerry occurring as recently as Friday.

Feinstein is describing 20 claims the CIA made for the value of intelligence gleaned through torture. None of these claims held up under examination. “The CIA’s claims that the EITs were necessary ... that’s a claim we conclude is inaccurate,” she says:
We took 20 examples that the CIA itself claimed to show the success of these interrogations. The CIA used these examples in presentations to the White House, testimony to Congress and... ultimately to the American people. “Our staff reviewed every one of the 20 cases and not a single case holds up,” Feinstein says. The study doesn’t claim no intelligence was gained, but that “actionable intelligence that was otherwise unavailable” was not obtained, she says. |

So now we have the torture when they said they didnt and a CIA acting apart from senate/congress. Its just one thing after another and empowers the likes of the conpiracist to believe in false flag activities to give them reason to act as though the rest of the world is simply there for their use. Much like how the states dont sign into stuff like climate change while expecting others to regarding nuclear agreements etc. Simple protectionism |

The people get given 'feel good' ethereal notions like representation but its not democracy, how can it be when institutions act among themselves? |

Interesting that China are mentioned, I speak often to a fella who was a pow for 2 years during Korean war and he said the only reason he survived was that the camp was run by the Chinese . He has always held a great respect for them .

Yes Leopard the north koreans would have shot him . The Chinese followed the convention, I thought any aid sent for the pow's would not be received so was surprised when he told me they did get parcels, including cigs, which the guards were mad for so the pows would trade them . He is a very interesting character and after listening to his stories i read more on the 'dirty war'. He said one of the main fears ( i thought disease) was the traps on the jungle paths of sharpened burnt bamboo, these would go through the sole of their boots, very painful and koreans knew it would take 2 more men to carry an injured man .
