Just watching the snooker and although Stephen Hendry is totally Scottish through and through, he doesn't have that strong an accent as compared to say, Billy Connolly or John Higgins.
Is there one particular regional accent that's become a kind of stereotype for what a lot of us perceive as a Scottish accent?

Yes, Glaswegian. The Edinburgh accent sounds like posh Scottish.
A recent survey determined that the best English spoken in the UK was in Royal Deeside.
Agree with poker. Loads of varied scottish accents. Same of course in england. Same in USA and Australia, thing with USA and Australia is they are at least clear regardless.
I think the Glasgow accent is the best accent in the world for male comedians while I think the Edinburgh accent is absolutely lovely when you hear a girl talking with that accent.
There's more than a hint of Northern Irish in the Caithness accent.
There's more than a hint of Scottish in the N.Ireand Ballymoney accent.
Pretty much all of Europe tends to have strong regional accents, the question is a bit like asking does England have regional accents. Much like England has Scouse Geordie West Country Brum Cockney, Scotland has Glaswegian North East Edinburgh etc. Ireland is the same. It's just the further you get away from your own accent it's harder to see the differences that are obvious to locals. A strong Dublin accent is massively different to Cork, to some it's all just Irish sounding, a German from the north may have trouble even understanding a rural Bavarian, to us it just sounds German. Arnie sounds German to us, to Germans he an Austrian farmer, he's as German to them as someone from the Welsh Valleys is Cockney, you just can't hear it. I know an Australian that can't tell Welsh and English accents apart :)
The strange one is North America where the level of change can be little across large distances. I'm sure it's because its a relatively new country and the level of movement/immigration coupled with it developing after mass communication, that kind of unifies things. Like people in the UK adopting americanisms because of media. OK obviously there is a large difference between a texas and a boston accent but that's across a vast distance, in Europe accents can vary strongly across a few miles.

Yeah but we can all understand any yank accent no matter how strong. They will really struggle to understand a strong geordie or Glaswegian accent. As will i.
I remember working with a German Doctor some years ago. Nice lady. I was speaking to her in German for the craic and she said I spoke better German than a Bavarian. She was clearly tickled by this which seems to prove Checking's comment about accents being noticeable to locals and indeed that Germans do have a sense of humor even if its a little strange.
Where I disagree with Checking is on his characterisation of American accents. On that I'd think we are no better than the Australian who can't tell the Welsh from English accent. EO I'm not saying they don't differ, they really do, just they differ over LARGER ranges and much less than here.
In europe it can often be a few miles and its very noticable. There, it's just much, less.
You just can NOT compare the differences there to Europe. Italy has massive differences up and down the country.

We all sound alike to foreigners. When on holiday I`ve even been mistaken for being English 
Was speaking to an American beauty in New York and she asked me where I came from. When I told her Scotland she replied, "Is that a small town just outside London" 
I was recently in Portugal and the taxi driver couldn't tell the difference between any accent in England. He said that to him there was a slight difference with the Scots compared to most English.
Given it's size I suppose to most Americans Scotland is just outside London. Funnily enough I was speaking to someone in America and they thought Ireland was on the European mainland.
I worked with four Scots on Canary Wharf in 1989.

Indigenous white Londoners have different accents.

Australian and New Zealand can easliy be told apart I think.
Not to a lot of Canadians.
Lost count of the number of times I was asked if I was from Australia. They must have severe hearing problems as I've got a 100% cockney accent.
New Zealand never got a mention, perhaps they don't know about it.

On the BBC now they are talking about the Pittsbug accent being voted the ugliest accent in the country.
This is strange as I can't really notice anything different about it, they have the southern accent, the Boston and New York accent, but traips across central us from coast to coast and the changes is not that noticeable, The American accent in general is quite broad, especially in comparison to the different English accents in what is a much smaller land mass, strange and probably unique when you think about it that you can pretty much tell which corner of the country or even city someone is from by their dialect, the Geordie, Scouse, Brummie, Mancunian, West Country and Cockney dialects are unmistakeable and are too strong for the Yanks to decipher, which is why whenever you see a Brit in an American Film or on an American TV show they are pretty much always the same stereotyped well spoken, middle class Brit that they can all understand, exception being Ozzy Osbourne who was a big TV star for a while but even then on many occassions they had to have subtitles when he was speaking

One thing that seems to be common with all Scotts, is they are unable to say anything, without the word "wee" in it.

accents in England do change rapidly
there are 6 indigenous dialects within 50 miles of my doorstep (Essex or Mockney ,Coastal and rural Suffolk,Ipswich,Fens,Norfolk,Standard RP English) all very distinctive in their own way - 20 if you include all the various East Europeans
East Anglian accents do have a touch of Australian as Taxi noted , about his Cockney accent - East Anglian is basically Cockney in a singing style .
I would say there are as many as 50 distinct accents in England alone .
For the Stokies on here ,i find the accent a hard one to fathom ,maybe even a touch of Scouse and Manchester in there ?
Coventry is the really hybrid one though - even a note of West country and East Anglian if you listen very clearly - possibly the only town where west country and Eastern meet .

At the 2011 Grand National in the Queen Mother Stand (paying more to get in a 'better' enclosure won't change where you're from) a group of 4 scouse lads, smartly dressed in suits, not drunk at all and very chatty, between races when it was quiet.
All was jovial until I asked 'How long did it take you to get here from Manchester?'and the mood immediately darkened.
Almost in unison, they said 'Were not fookin' Mancs.'

CMAT - as a Scouser, some of us just don't give a shít mate and I've always had the same view...I've recently become a first-time Grandad and the poor kid's gonna be brought up a Manc supporting United 
My daughter's involved with 'one of them lot' but the most important thing is he's a decent geezer (although he's an arrogant fcuk...nearly as bad as me) and it's also easier to take as he loses any sort of head to head challenge with me
PS - what makes things a tad bitter-sweet is that I'm an Everton fan and the schadenfreude United have given me over the last 20 years (in seeing fans of the Red Scum absolutely devastated) has now come back to haunt me
