The top cop leading the hunt for missing Madeleine McCann is to retire, it emerged today.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, who has led Operation Grange since it was launched in 2011, is to step down before Christmas.

He will be replaced by Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall, who is currently with the homicide and major crime command, the Metropolitan Police said.

Mr Redwood said: "After careful consideration and a full and rewarding career in the Met the time is right for me to move on.

"The past three and a half years leading Operation Grange has been an extraordinary privilege, and I leave the investigation in the very capable hands of my experienced colleague Nicola."

Wall has served 25 years at the Met, eight as a DCI, and heads up the Murder Investigation Team in west London. She's also a trained hostage and crisis negotiator. Married two years ago, her husband does contract work in the Middle East and she sees him sporadically. "We don't have children," she says briskly. "I've got the greatest respect for women who balance both - because that's fantastic - but I don't have to. And I've got a house in Putney, and I have a really nice life."

For Wall, there is no typical murder. No two jobs are the same. "We could end up with the Tia Sharp jobs of this world," she says of the 12-year-old whose body was discovered at her grandmother's house last August. "And then there are jobs that are equally as difficult as those, but that just somehow don't get that media spark." She usually has about six or seven live cases at any one time, and prides herself on her investigative speed; she is only partially joking when she attributes her low media profile to the fact "we solve cases so quickly nobody gets involved…"

A diminutive peroxide blonde, with fine cheekbones and a faint Derbyshire accent, she cuts an unusual figure. "I'm a bit different," she admits. "The jury nearly fell over last time I was in the box!" She's glad that the current crop of TV detectives are not "as mumsy" as their forebears and has a small fondness for Saga Noren "because she's quite feminine, very glamorous, very pretty and very capable, too."

As plainclothes officers, the detectives are united in their determination to look good. Wall especially enjoys playing with her femininity, if only to shake up the stuffier factions of the Met that still exist. "I usually wear a heel, and I always paint my nails," she says with a toss of her well-groomed head. "They usually brighten a day."

Do wonder exactly why Redwood is going . My guess is he hasnt been able to make a halfway credible case against any of the - dozens  - of suspected 'abductors' and doesn't fancy looking elsewhere .....

A detective doesn't leave a case if he thinks there is an end in sight, probably got sick of sending people off on their jollys and done the respectable thing and retired.

Let's all hope that a further array of Pretendy Suspects can be found, so that UK police officers, worn out after spending all day investigating Pretendy "Hate" Crimes (rather than the mass-raping of white underaged girls up and down the country) can have a nice break maybe in Barbados, the Australian Gold Coast or The Bahamas. It's uncanny how the sightings of the "missing" Maddy are never in Pakistan or Somalia.

They would be unlikely to be reported from those regions.

!st Time. I think you can put it down to 'natural wastage'. People retire. Private detectives had some sort of financial disagreement, and generally, you can only expect that one's focus and dedication should wane with the passing of time.
It must be an incredible burden to try to keep the search 'active' with the added stress of media character assassination.

I'm pretty sure that they do. It would be very strange if they didn't. Perhaps you're being a little harsh in your assessment.
Personally, I feel sorrow for everybody involved in this in any way whatsoever. It can only have brought sadness and regret to everybody.

What's weird about it. I've seen numerous references to Madeleine as Maddie.
I honestly don't see any issue with it.

Shortening someone's name as if you know here is plain peculiar and over familiar with a child who nobody here knows, also there needs to be an investigation into why so much time and money has been put into this one missing child, there is no justification for it all

As I've said I've seen Madeleine referenced as Maddie on numerous occasions and maybe because of the coverage we do feel, subconsciously, that we do know her.
I do know that every time I print her name or read any reference to her I do feel a deep sorrow that this happened.
Although none of know what happened that night I think that deep down most people fear the worst.

I'd say there were more people (all living in hot climates) who witnessed the pretendy kidnapping of the McCann girl than were at the storied Sex Pistols concert at the Manchester Free Trade Hall back in 1976, and let's not forget everyone was there from Wilson, Morrissey, Hucknall and Joy Division through to the Rainbow Puppets, and most of the population of Vanuatu.

A lot of things sell newspapers, this case doesn't sell them anymore when there is a "latest suspect" it bores them more likely as bad as that might be to say,

Why on earth would the British Media want to blow the whistle on any of this drivel? They have a vested financial interest in keeping this ludicrous show on the road for as long as they can, regardless of the sums they've already paid out in damages and the grovelling humiliating apologies they've had to make in courtrooms. They are not remotely interested in sparing the discerning viewer and reader more of the type of misery they've inflicted upon us to date.

I don't suppose that any of you have ever taken the time to think about the purpose of police interviews or searches. You seem to assume that they are always to find the guilty party, but this is not necessarily so.

If YOU were looking for a needle in a haystack, you would never find it. The best way has to be...remove the haystack. Et voila! There's your needle!

Come on now that's a bit naive, it's been 8 years looking for phantom suspects - they are all on a jolly up, but it's at the tax payers expense, if it was all private then fair enough
