There was a terrific interview with Jimmy on the Colin Murray show a couple of weeks ago about his life and times in snooker re his new book.

You can listen to it here.
Some great stories:

I will listen later TT. Have never listened to him before but listened to your posted clip re Ali on the other thread.
Was really good and funny, never realised what I was missing.

There's one thing for sure; whether Jimmy is drinking alcohol now or not I'd definitely buy him as many drinks as he liked if I met him.

A great bloke.

The Colin Murray show is probably the best radio show going, Akabula. He has some great guests on and it's never boring.

The Jimmy White interview is brilliant.

I met him a few times TT and you're right he is a great bloke.
The company I worked for (Hills) sponsored the Scottish Masters and we used the players for promotions around the betting shops.
I sometimes was given the task of picking them up at the airport and running them about.
He was by far the best. Quiet guy and always thanked you for running him about.
Honest as well. Asked him if he was worth a punt and he replied no adding that the only thing he'd had in his hand for the past week was a pint. Laugh

Haha! That's what I like about him, Akabula - really says it like it is and there's no bullshine about him.

Always pleasant and polite whenever you hear him on tv or radio and doesn't moan about anything or begrudge anyone their success - even at his cost.

My kind of bloke.

TBF all the snooker players were okay and Hendry surprised me.
Lacked Jimmy's charm but still friendly and joked away with the customers.
Tight though. He got a tip for a horse and he put £20 on it. Won @ 8s and I had £25 on it. Laugh
£20 to him must be like a penny to me.
Out of all the sports personalities I met when running them about the only one I didn't like was McCririck. Vile.

I can imagine, Akabula - with both.

I met John Spencer a few times regarding him playing kalooki and he was a nice chap and I also 'encountered' Alex Higgins once at Manchester airport when he was as drunk as a skunk and trying to steal my hat.

His manager/friend pulled him away from me and apologised profusely, while I just gave Higgins the hard stare - as I was with my dad at the time and it was upsetting him. And that was most certainly not on.

Another cracker I remember about Jimmy was when he failed to turn up.
I was with Ian Doyle (Hendrys manager) who phoned him, he was in London.
He was playing that night in Motherwell and hadn't a clue. -"You sure" he asked Doyle.
Eventually Doyle told him to get to the airport and he'd arrange a flight etc.
I thought Doyle would blow up but when he rang off he just laughed and said "Typical Jimmy"

haha, great stuff!

That's the way he rolls - and people love him for it.

No malice aforethought. Just living his life. However it turns up.

Nothing wrong with that whatsoever.

Bill and Lenny Ganley opened my mates snooker centre, no fee just all they could eat and drink. My mate said it would have been cheaper to pay them. Before anyone says Lenny was teetotal that was a load of gonads.

Don't see how anyone could put up an argument for any other player being more enthralling to watch to than Alex Higgins. Just one example. He lost a match and was wined out of his head. He stayed on drinking in his chair after the match was long over. Sad to watch but absolutely enthralling at the same time.

i met alex at the guild hll preston he was in the bookies coral wih bar nearbye. he was backing the horses and drinking heavily. his girlfriend at the time was siobhan a stunning blonde, as the afternnon wore on he was pissed.
he was playing willie thorne in the evening and started the evening session 4/3 down
alex potted the balls off lampshades and ran away with the match
truley remarkable.
on another occasion alex was playing robotic steve davis, barry hearne said at the interval when davis was 7 nil up in the uk championships he had witnessed the best ever display of snooker

alex went on to win to send his many fans wild with delight.

I regularly watch that coral uk final on utube, great to watch as you see alex get more and more drunk through the match if you watch every frame, asks for lagers and guiness in between frames,he was pretty hammered by the end of the game.

What a lot of new snooker fans don't realize how good he really was, look at his cueing in this a ton in just over 3 mins on these cloths with ivory balls, never moves on the shot an absolute genius..

Brilliant quote by Barry Hearn just related by Colin Murray on TalkSport:

"Peter Ebdon swims a mile every day. With a bit of luck he'll be 365 miles away by this time next year"

Most gifted :  Alex Higgins

Most boring :  Terry Griffiths (among many)

Most enthralling :  a big money match I once witnessed involving Count Ted and Tommy Toes, with fifties flying like confetti and Tommy emerging triumphant on a re-spotted black and demanding payment in Funny Feet ice lollies.

Well done Tictacman, Itcanbedone and Wit-Ham.

Ebdon must be feeling like a very popular snooker player tonight!

I know Eddie was boring, but he never bothered me as much as Ebdon - especially when he was giving it the big 'hoorah' when he won.

Boring - and a prat t'boot.
