[b]The head of Britain’s immigration watchdog has accused Theresa May of personally delaying the publication of his office’s independent reports which are critical of the asylum system.

In a letter to senior MPs seen by the Guardian, John Vine discloses that the home secretary is sitting on five inspections believed to be critical of the government, one of which was written five months ago.

The chief inspector of borders and immigration also warns the Commons public accounts committee that “the independence of my role is being compromised” after the home secretary assumed control of the timing of the publication of his reports.

Vine’s letter will raise serious questions about whether May is attempting to control an independent inspector in the runup to the 2015 general election.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of immigration, the promise to reduce it to tens of thousands was utterly stupid.  It was totally unachievable, or at least uncontrollable, unless we left the EU and even if the got it down 90,000 or 70,000 would still be considered being 'swamped' by those who oppose immigration, including many Tories.

Jump in your car, take the ferry across to other European countries. Drive round for a while. Visit as many countries as you can and then get the ferry back and drive around the UK. The first thing that will hit you is what a ridiculously overcrowded little island we are.
We are full up and don't need an extra million people every few years..

I just wondered - are they blaming it all on immigrants??  I thought most people had a much better insight on what is going on.  Including the immigration scandal.
When you consider how many it is we are talking about, though, I would guess it is a very serious issue affecting a lot of unemployed and low paid workers.  Facts and the Notting Hill crowd are not affected by low wage immigrants.

It's rather ironic that a poster made reference to sweatshops above, if it wasn't for regulation we'd still have child labour and the version of capitalism we have is anti- regulation.
It's all well and good referring to tyranny as supposed examples of socialism while avoiding the fact that we supposedly had a civil war to end tyranny of the monarchy....which ended up creating an elitist system that handed power over to enterprise so the could make all at any cost...the cost being the lives of the majority as people are allowed to be rewarded to levels that far exceed their merit within a finite economy.
I suppose the capitalist world would consider the sugar barons of the 17C 'captains of industry' today because they 'created' 5hit loads of wealth by stealing it from the people who put the effort in?

The fact there are few examples of honourable societies to look at in the world is as much down to the topless dancer of capitalism on its doorstep tempting humans to 'join the fun' and not care about the consequences, even though we have all become a people hell bent on greed rather than need who want to take out more than we contribute within a finite controlled economy.

Facts is wrong because it is capitalism and the ruling elite who
have wanted immigration. Straight after WW2 they realised that because
of the shortage of labour and the need to rebuild the average man had
for the first time power in his hands. This could not be allowed to continue and since then governments have allowed waves of immigration
with the sole purpose of creating a society in which big business once
again maintained the upper hand until now we have a situation were hundreds of people are after one job and millions are unemployed and
with no prospects or job security.
Immigration has been the biggest con by capitalists and the left have
fallen for it.

What people don`t realise is that for a country to be successful there
must be a shortage of labour. It is not just that a successful country
will have a shortage of labour but that a shortage of labour in and of
itself creates a successful country...I know it seems strange.

Labour has always been controlled through history to suit the owners of wealth.
The Black Plague created a need greater than the workforce could supply and so laws were created to force people to work and protect power bases and fortunes.
The enclosure act in the 18thC took huge swathes of land used by everyone and divied it between the well off.
The shortage of work and the saturation of workers suits enterprise during a period where state funded initiatives have been the only real countenances of a decaying need for workers (since the industrial revelution(s) by creating things like the Internet, the computer and 'smart tech'.
Payrolls get subsidised by the tax take while they continue to legally defraud society. People are only employed when the company can make more from the worker than the worker gets paid. Investment only occurs when profits can be excreted.
The market was supposed to be allowed to function and decide, but when it fails the rules are changed and we are supposed to forget the fact that Keynesianism bailed it out. Huge sectors like the financial and power (where investors artificially use a vital necessity and decide amounts of return) are used as vehicles to provide opportunities for those with huge wealth to make huge returns by doing nothing.
These are the real issues, not frowning at the cultures of different societies that come here. The issue is again the tory smarmy lie machine pulls out some contrived reason why it's not them its others' fault.
When they came to power they said everything was the fault of those in power last, now they have been in power it's the fault of everyone internationally.

Actually historians looking at Britain were perplexed at the years following the Black Plague. They noticed a rise in wealth in the
peasant and working classes that was unprecedented in Britains history.
The looked into why this had occurred and realised it was because of
the shortage of labour.
Only under a labour shortage can the average person have a good life.

In reference to tory Blair being representation of socialism, then it's rather apt is it not that the problems most have with him was down to the fact he emulated tory ideology, therefore supporters of that ideology can hardly scoff.
The continued pillage of services which arguably had everyone's interest in and the frankly illicit level of allowing people to commit control fraud were all old tory concepts sold under the belief that looking after oneself was somehow virtuous and had no ill effect.
We now see evidence in the black holes of the economy, and any amount of blaming others like labour 'for spending others money' or selling off gold too low cannot hide this fact.

The labour shortage did indeed result in better conditions and pay for the workers initially, that is why laws were made to kerb it as landowners couldn't get the workers at the desired rate to fell crops etc.
They bemoaned the fact they would lose estates and so legislation stepped in.

It has nothing to do with Labour or Tory policy..there has been a struggle in Britain for power since WW2 between the vast majority of
people and those who have the money and power...immigration has been
the trump card of those in control and they have won and in the process
are destroying Britain and Europe.

Immigration is a sideshow

It is the most important factor because population is so important,
the only way out of recession is a drastic and quick reduction in the population of Britain and Europe..nothing else will stop Europes collapse.

While I will agree that over population of any land mass becomes a problem as an unrequired workforce exceeds demand I suggest that this is one part of a larger problem that is focussed on to cover the extent of the problem.
If world poverty can be cured 2.5 times over by the amount of money transferred collectively out of the reaches of the tax authorities over a period of just over a year (I forget the source of that statistic) then that suggests irrespective of vocation there is plenty of money to go around.
The fact that it's secured and held by small amounts of individuals is the real issue, and that because people get rewarded more egregiously out of kilter in relation to ability at the top than they do at the bottom.

although surprisingly people in many top jobs get massive rewards without having any measurable skills..the city of London eg is somewherethat vast salaries can be had for what is in truth a job were the individual ability plays almost no part, in fact the less perceptive can often do better...for a while.

You only need to look at football as an example of this.

Wayne Rooney isn't 300 times better than a professional earning 1000 a week.
The gamble is that the brand Manchester United who were built off the pay checks of the parochial working classes of Manchester and floated on an exchange in New York and contributes tax there but play in our league leverage risk of fame and glory from anyone who will buy into them (even tours of China) so it doesn't matter if Rooney doesn't contibute 300 more goals a week than the other player as the paying fools on the gate pay for it.
It collapses ofc when the fickle support leaves them because they don't do well enough in relation to pay and they then quickly lose revenue.
Lehman brothers collapsed, Man Utd can too.

The irony of the poverty question (and distribution of wealth) is that in the poorest of countries there are some of the richest people on earth.

Countries like Kenya and Nigeria are incredibly rich places for the few who take all the money. No one in these countries should starve. Even less so in India where possibly 800m people don't have effective sanitation. Utter madness.

Even in a place like Malawi with few resources, the Ministers drive around the country in Mercs while people starve.

Easy to blame the West for all of the problems but the way our cake's been divided is hundreds times fairer than in many poor nations.

While that maybe true Injera it does detract somewhat from the portrayal given by the back slappers in Westminster who get erect over the traditions and fancy palaces to say we are just a little bit better in reality than banana republics.
Of course that's a slight exaggeration but not much since we have the worst inequality of all developed nations and printed money like the last vestiges of a failed state remember.
So who exactly are we keeping afloat when the queen owns over 50% of real estate and around 65% or capital assets are owned by just 20% of the nation?
That's even before we start going into the way we specialise in production of warfare.......

I take the point Dusty but we are massively better off than we realise.

Things that were once luxuries a few decades ago are now considered essentials.

We of course take decent housing/heating/light/food and clothes for granted, whilst millions upon millions can only dream of these things in other countries.

That's a huge achievement but in most places I hear little appreciation let alone gratitude for what we DO have as opposed to what we lack.

The wealthy will always get richer because money makes money. You'd have to be a daft millionaire not to increase your wealth.

The challenge is there for the rest of us to achieve great things (if that floats our boat). Sadly the less well off are patronised by Govt ('we're on the side of ordinary people' etc) and have their needs paid for or hugely subsidised.

All that does is reinforce a sense of 'woe is me' and stifles ambition and personal responsibility.

My personal belief is that consumer credit and debt made much of the improvement possible.
While the collective wealth increases so does debt....so does that really equate for any real gain in the end?
The economy was boosted by finding oil reserves in the north sea which was like free money and like all things take out merchants skin the animal and leave the crumbs that fall from the table while being called 'wealth creators'.
It has always been the same. Capitalism requires growth continually, when you get too big for your own pond you have to take over other peoples. Much like getting non capitalist economies to buy into theirs, piliging much of it and then getting them to borrow from the IMF.

On a personal level I equate the action of humans with what I refer to the 'harvest syndrome', one where in days of old people stored up food for baron times ahead. In contemporary times money displaces food as a store of wealth as it doesnt easily go off. We all have to calculate the amount required to take us into old age, but the difference is the plague instilled by the notions of 'get rich quick' or 'self before society' mean the greed has taken over need.

I read an article the other day which was allegedly an interview with Putin. In it he stated that if any muslims wanted to settle in Russia then they must eat like a Russian, work like a Russian and breathe like a Russian. They will not be allowed to litter the country with mosques as they have done in the US and UK, and do not expect Russia to change any of it's laws to accommodate their religious beliefs.

I'm off to Moscow.

mate of mine went to St Petersburg CMAT a couple of years ago, he was queuing at the railway station and the Russian police went down the line and made every non white get their passports out. He said it was a lovely place and was treated well by everyone despite him being British.
