Iyes i was.

Thought it was great a seminal moment if you like. Its often reported the sound was **** but i don't remember it like that at all i was near the front put thought it was oneo f their better performances and ive seen the band many times live. My memories are a little hazy a few things stand out, it was rammed full sure plenty got in illegally. The start was electric can clearly remember brown coming on stage saying the time is now and it feeling so real. She bangs the drums was probably my favourite moment.

bangs the drums would have been a great moment , watched the film spike island never thought it would be up to much but thought it was decent ,  makes me wish i was old enough back then to go , just a group of mates all buzzing to get tickets.

"Sunset Sunday at Spike Island" was dry all day actually. I went and can assure all that it was one of the worst concerts I've ever seen. The laughable "support" acts were DJs playing unlistenable music and shouting out things like "Manchester", "Liverpool" and (bizarrely) "Sheffield" which completely mystified the revellers, all of whom appeared to be pretending to have a good time, dressed in those awful late 80s Acid House clothes and "Reni hats" and also pretending to be on ecstasy.

if you were a raver it was all about sundance and scratchwood services if i remember right.

ive seen few short videos of the supports bands rave/house whatever sounded b@lls , ive only heard stone roses online etc and the quality on the albums / singles etc compared to the live gigs is massive , but still reckoned i would have enjoyed it.

There were NO support bands. Just DJs playing music to mostly disinterested spectators. For HOURS. The Stone Roses trudged on at around 9pm and played until around 10-30pm.

I must say I felt like a complete freak there, dressed in a light sweater, straight jeans, and car binoculars. Stood out like a sore thumb.
Report alun2005 November 25, 2014 12:28 AM GMT
Everyone else was dressed and acting like Pete "Bez" Docherty, the lead singer with the appalling Cheerful Tuesdays band.
Report chavman November 25, 2014 12:29 AM GMT
the binoculars could have come in handy for perving though.fair play Laugh
Report alun2005 November 25, 2014 12:33 AM GMT
That entire Madchester scene was embarrassingly bad at the time, and looks even worse in retrospect. Entirely media-driven, and I bet the organisers of Golf's Ryder Cup are hugely ashamed to have named it after the Cheerful Tuesdays alleged "lyricist".

when i say support band , i mean some djs ( frankie bones or knuckles maybe?) and a few people at front are swinging about on each others shoulders , prob out their t1ts

i know sound was meant to be sh1t , think the band where prob out their faces also , no wonder they wanted no cameras in , its was for the moment i think not for the tape releases and future , had to be there aint it

Everybody was at Spike Island - Fact
Report toffee87 November 26, 2014 2:26 PM GMT
I was there and was bored sh!tless - I'd have been a 21 yr old student !

I hate concerts where you can hear people talking - the sound just got carried away - like when I saw Michael Jackson at Aintree, apparently my parents heard it better at home 6 miles away
For that reason the only outdoor concerts I would do now is footy stadiums as the sound should be contained within the stands

I've still got my ticket. Would any of the cognoscenti on here know whether it's worth a few quid to salvage what's left of an unsatisfactory occasion?

Will be listening to them, lots over xmas..Silly

Toffee's right, the sound just got blown off in the wind. I had seen them at Bristol Bierkeller the summer before and they still had the same sound system for Spike Island it seems.

Probably sounded great in the next field.

Really the event was about being there rather than anything great about the performance.
