ALL mothers are correct, and we were all told not to put anything into our ear except our elbow.But lately my ear is itchy and it needs a scratch ,so what do I use to it.i know cotton buds are the worst thing to use so anybody got any ideas on how to clean your ears,i am told don't even put soap and water in your ear ,and never dry your ear inside with a towel as it is dangerous.so what do the superstars use to clean their ears.

you did not tell me how you clean your ears,everyone has to do it,so how the feck can you clean them when the doctors say, never put anything into your ear.
anyhow the doctor syringes my ear ,tells me never to put anything in it,and tells me to get a hot water bottle, wrap a towel round it ,and lay my ear on it for a short time.He then charged me 50 quid.so I says to myself I will ask the experts on the chit chat forum for advice and it will cost nothing.  |

I never clean them other than having a dig with my pinky every so often.
As far as I'm concerned any wax in there is there for a reason - to stop bad things getting deep into my ear canal. |

I JUST can not buy the idea of all the forumites lying down every night on hot water bottles ,so my question is "what do you use to clean your ears"

I am sure when a guy walks about he is picking dust up in his ears every day,and sleeping on pillows will pick up dust,so there must be a market for a miniature ear hoover.

like if you think about it,jockeys and footballers are covered in mud every day so they have to clean their ears.but medical advice is never put anything in your ear.so again I ask "what do you use to clean your ears."

A few years ago I bought a little antique bottle with a what looked like a silver spoon inside. The seller said it was for pepper. It turned out it was not a spoon but an earwax scoop.Apparently one got ones other half to scrape the wax from ones ear.

There are already several ear vacuums on the market, how effective they are I have no idea.
I went to the doctor to have my ears syringed many years ago after suffering severe discomfort for weeks. It took three visits to the nurse to shift the wax (pouring olive oil into my ears in the meantime) and when it finally came out I thought I was the victim of some sort of practical joke. The lump of wax she showed me looked like a freaking brussel sprout; inconceivable it could have been in my ear. |

One of the ear drops products -- and I've forgotten which one so look in Boots or another big pharmacist -- comes with a rubber bulb to squirt lukewarm water into your ears. Try that.
But if it keeps itching or is painful or smelly for more than a week or so, maybe it is time to let your doctor take a look. |

a small curette designed for the ear used to be available from chemists, add the olive oil as above & it used to work well
nearest thing to a soft scoop of that size in most peoples houses is the pointy bit on the lid of a bic pen |

Isn't the movement of the wax supposed to be what cleans the ear? Mind you, I'm deaf, so what do I know?
I put a drop of medicinal olive oil from Superdrug in each ear every morning using a small plastic pipette with a rubber bulb on it, and this stops wax hardening and blocking the ear in the long term. |

google this - i read that a doctor with kids used a very weak solution of hydrogen peroxide on cotton buds to swab the inner ear. very weak!!! be careful(look it up online) - he was an ear nose and throat specialist. supposedly helps to fight colds and other stuff as they are all interconnected. use a wet one in water first, swab ears. then dip in the hp, swab again. you hear a gentle fizzing as it kills any bacteria.
ten percent solution, dilute to a third in water? that's what i use. |

About half-deaf for low-frequency sounds, such as traffic, severely deaf for male speech and profoundly deaf for female speech.
If you have a guitar handy, I can't hear anything on the top two strings (E and B). It's the fact I still have quite a bit of low-frequency hearing which makes it impossible to program a hearing aid. Even a £4,000 top-of-the-market pair from Phonak can't compress the range of frequencies enough to boost speech without blasting my ears as soon as someone shuts a door or even just raises their voice. |

The wax is there for a reason which is to trap dust and pollen etc. If you use a cotton bud you will only remove the smallest amount unless there really is a build up, in which case you will simply push it in further, which is not good. Get yourself a "Pipette" from the pharmacy (just a few pence) and fill the bottle with olive oil (your ears are not snobs, so any kind of olive oil is good) Pop it into a cup with hot water and warm for thirty seconds. Fill the pipette with enough for three or four drops, and keep your head tilted for a minute, then put cotton wool or tissue in and do the other one (i'm assuming you have two) in the same way. |

Had to take the wife to hospital a couple of months ago cos she had shoved a cotton bud so far up the ear canal that the end bit came off the bud and had disappeared...nurses and doctor had a right go at her

You need to post a pic of this, as bending it vertically is a nonsense instruction! How different would it be bending it sideways, and which part of it, and how much of it are you suggesting to bend it? Oh, and what size of paper clip please? For Christ's sake, your ears are somewhat precious,are they not, and to even consider such action is asking for trouble....imo! |

Used to use the top of a bic biro, now, despite the medical advice I use cotton buds. So far no problem.
