Lee Evans retiring from comedy.

always reminds me of norman wisdom but less funny

I think people who go to see him laugh because others are laughing. Either that or they pump laughing gas into the arena. Because he actually does not tell any jokes.

I went to one of his gigs,and I had to tell jokes to myself

He was amusing when he first started out but now a one trick pony, similar to  Jim Carrey.

I have tried to watch him many times to see if i'm missing something. I'm convinced people are laughing because other's are laughing. I bet if you ask any leaving the gig to tell you something funny from the gig they wouldn't be able to. Comedians today in general are dire. Jimmy Carr is stealing a living. Bill Hicks, Robin Williams (Live at the met) is a level above anything today. There is good comedians out there but most are just bland.

The missus has bought tickets for John Bishop, and i have to go. Anybody seen him live? What is in store for me?

It's funny that comedy, an art form designed primarily to make people happy (however temporarily), inspires such fierce contempt in people.

As far as I'm concerned the aforementioned Evans and Carrey are rubbish, but that's just because I don't like their particular physical brand of comedy. Some people do, and good for them. Two of, in fact possibly the two, most famous comedians of all time are Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, and their comedy was entirely physical (at least in their heyday). Even so, I don't like it.

It's funny that anfeild mentioned Carr and Hicks. Carr tells jokes. Hicks was all about narrative. I've watched a couple of his DVDs and I'm pretty sure he never told a joke. He's most famous for angry, narrative polemic told with excellent timing. They both make me laugh.

Bishop is way too family/granny friendly for my liking, but someone has to do the gig.

Bishop is about right for his age group imo

Good point....you should Email him. You might get some work out of it if you have a funny story about going to the supermarket or a similar anecdote.

Suppose its each to their own. However Lee Evans following does baffle me. I don't understand how he is so big. Fair play but just don't get him. Some of the bbc comedians are stealing a living imo. Sarah Macmillan and Miranda Hart are on the gravy boat.

Jim Carey is the funniest man alive in my book.

Problem is once you've watched Citizen Khan nothing else quite matches up to it

I caught some of Khan on comic relief, is his show better as on that he was horrendously unfunny and just very annoying, I couldn't sit and watch that for any length of time. Even Lee Evans is better.
Bishop is declining with age, a bit sort of self aware warm and smug now but still infintely better than Russell Brand ever was or will be.

As Stewart Lee so memorably said "everyone seems to like all those 'Russell comedians' these days for some reason dont they"

One of the most embarassing things Id seen was Russell Kane doing that standup show where they are given topics and they have to make srtuff up and be funny on the spot. He totally died on his 'arris.

Lee Evans retiring from comedy is like a Division 2 footballer who has never played for England retiring from international football.

Yet, gun to head, I would still rather watch him than Russell Howard.

Stewart Lee, Sean Lock, Lee Mack, Milton Jones, Tim Vine, many more. There's a very long list of good comedians out there, but it's that tw*t Brand who's the most rich and famous.

Brand couldn't fill Stewart Lee's trousers.

Stewart Lee is excellent as is Sean Lock. Lee's top gear sketch is probably the best sketch i have ever heard from any comedian. Up there with Bill Hicks on the la riots.

Stewert Lee is the best comedia in the UK by a million miles.

The likes of Russel Howard, Miranda Heart, Millican etc are not fit to be compared to Lee.

Yes that's the one. Its totally spot on. So good never tire of watching it. I have to say Russell Howard is probably the least funny popular comedian to ever live.

Spot on.  Never really found him that funny, just manic and sweating a lot.  Amazes me how popular some of these so-called comedians are and the big tours they do and a lot of sell-out venues.

Jerry Sadowitz is funny and a superb magician. He has been known to rant
about current  TV comics especially McIntyre. Ironically he had his own  TV show
years ago and blew it

I'm not sure Sadowitz blew it - he just doesn't compromise, which is hardly a bad thing for a comic

I was going to be so cynical but utmost respect.

The funniest most imaginative bit of comedy I have seen in years was Rhod Gilbert when he first appeared.He did a routine about buying a duvet that had me crying with laughter and followed up with a tale about a million candle strength torch that was even better.I thought he was comedy gold but he hasn't cracked a worthwhile joke since.

I've always loved torches. I've found myself buying a nice torch randomly when I've already got a pile of them. LED torches give me the horn

Rhod Gilbert is proper funny.  Not sure the various panel shows he is on do him justice.
