Terry McGarvey, 48. Dangerously ill from polycytheamia, Terry asked for an ambulance to be called during his Work Capability Assessment. He knew that he wasn't well enough to attend his WCA but feared that his benefits would be stopped if he did not.
He died the following day.
Elaine Lowe, 53. Suffering from COPD and fearful of losing her benefits. In desperation, Elaine chose to commit suicide.
Mark Wood, 44. Found fit for work by Atos, against his Doctors advice and assertions that he had complex mental health problems. Starved to death after benefits stopped, weighing only 5st 8lb when he died.

It always makes me laugh when I listen to certain people who are claiming benefits for mental problems like depression, talk about their illness.
These are the ones who come across fluently, articulately, and with a perfect grasp of what they are trying to convey.
Yet the first thing that is impaired by depression is mental agility.
How can they explain that?
It's like someone running down the street claiming they've got a broken leg.

I have lots of experience in this field, and many of the cleverest people throughout history have suffered from severe depressive illness without turning into some unintelligible, jibbering jelly.

People with severe depression create little and those with a long term depressive illness even less. I saw it first hand when I was seconded to mental health during my nurse training. People usually suffering what was then known as manic depression would spend weeks and sometimes months in a catatonic state when they were depressed. They had to be fed and washed and even turned in bed so as not to develop pressure sores. Then when the mania phase kicked in they were off the scale. What you are describing, with extremely creative people, is usually people suffering from manic depression (bipolar disorder) who during the mania phase can be extremely creative and able to work for incredible amounts of time and produce incredible insights.

A grandad who had just found out his benefits were being stopped shot himself dead – after telling friends he was “unable to cope”.
Shaun Pilkington, 58, was sent a letter saying he was to lose his Employment and Support Allowance, which he got after a long-term illness.
He was told he would have to be reassessed and needed to prove he was eligible. But as the hearing approached, friends said Shaun, a licensed gamekeeper, became discouraged.
Days later he called police and said he was about to kill himself. They found him dead at his flat.
A neighbour said: “There were armed police everywhere. Sadly he’d gone through with his threat.
“It is a tragedy. He was upset because he got a letter saying his ESA was being stopped.
“He was pretty down about it and said he was finding it hard to cope with the decision. He was a lovely man. It is not fair what the Government is doing.”
Well-wishers left floral tributes and cans of Stella outside Shaun’s home in Beighton, Sheffield.
The neighbour added: “It all got on top of him – having no money for Christmas and being warned he’d lose his benefits.
“It’s wrong what they’re doing, targeting people on benefits. We haven’t got a lot of money but the Government seems intent on cutting it.”
Registered gun-keeper Shaun was divorced and had two grown-up children and a two-month-old grandson.
Another neighbour, Shani Hird, said yesterday: “We have lost a dear neighbour who shot himself due to his money being stopped. His appeal was due next week but he felt he could not carry on.
“This is so sad. This isn’t the first time this has happened and it won’t be the last. I think it is terrible the Government’s benefit cuts are causing vulnerable people so much pain and misery.”
Police yesterday confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.
Shaun’s estranged family was too upset to talk. He joins a growing list of people who have taken their lives since the Tory-led Coalition employed private firm Atos to reassess thousands of people on long-term benefits.

A grandad who had just found out his benefits were being stopped shot himself dead – after telling friends he was “unable to cope”.
Shaun Pilkington, 58, was sent a letter saying he was to lose his Employment and Support Allowance, which he got after a long-term illness.
He was told he would have to be reassessed and needed to prove he was eligible. But as the hearing approached, friends said Shaun, a licensed gamekeeper, became discouraged.
Days later he called police and said he was about to kill himself. They found him dead at his flat.
A neighbour said: “There were armed police everywhere. Sadly he’d gone through with his threat.
“It is a tragedy. He was upset because he got a letter saying his ESA was being stopped.
“He was pretty down about it and said he was finding it hard to cope with the decision. He was a lovely man. It is not fair what the Government is doing.”

The neighbour added: “It all got on top of him – having no money for Christmas and being warned he’d lose his benefits.
“It’s wrong what they’re doing, targeting people on benefits. We haven’t got a lot of money but the Government seems intent on cutting it.”
Registered gun-keeper Shaun was divorced and had two grown-up children and a two-month-old grandson.
Another neighbour, Shani Hird, said yesterday: “We have lost a dear neighbour who shot himself due to his money being stopped. His appeal was due next week but he felt he could not carry on.
“This is so sad. This isn’t the first time this has happened and it won’t be the last. I think it is terrible the Government’s benefit cuts are causing vulnerable people so much pain and misery.”
Police yesterday confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.

I find it astonishing that someone would take their own life rather than face the prospect of reassessment for their benefit claim.
That's what idleness breeds, it makes some people too idle to even attend to their personal cleanliness. Or in the case of others too idle to even chase up their claim for benefits.

Over the years I've known quite a few people who genuinely can't work because of a disability.
Unfortunately I've known quite a few who are at it.
The malingerers must take their portion of the blame alongside everyone else who puts a strain on the economy one way or another.

That's exactly the point we have been making all along akabula. Any government of whatever hue would find itself in a difficult position regarding sorting out the con men from the genuine. The problem hasn't arisen because of the government or indeed ATOS. It has arisen because people are at it. Does it matter? In the grand scheme of things that may not. The point is that there are vast swathes of people earning a pittance for working hard and we really shouldn't rub their noses in it. They know nothing of the rich taking the pi55. They know plenty of their fellow citizens at the bottom making like a bandit.

That's a big issue ebul and a mixture of poor management in the 50's, dinosaur unions and the fact that Germany and Japan spent their Marshall Plan money on upgrading their industrial base and we spent ours on forming the NHS. We put the cart before the horse and paid the price.
Someone earning 20k and contributing 3000 tax is making a bigger sacrifice than someone earning 2million and paying 800,000 tax, not in monetary terms of course but in regards to their solvency and how it effects their overall standard of living.
Sure there are folk who are able to work but don`t want to, but why should genuinely disabled and sick people be penalised and suffer because of a minority? We all know people who are genuine people who have been victims of the Tory cuts and this is morally wrong imo.

Not referring to posts but to Tory policy and IDS in particular. They are evil and don`t care about the poor, sick and disabled. All Tories care about is MONEY. I`m All Right Jacks the lot of them.
Only genuine claimants are suffering from these cut backs, as you`ll find that the "fraudsters" are "streetwise" and know how to beat the system, just like the rich who know how to dodge their taxes.

yes, loads of them - 70 people a week now dying within a very short space of time after being told bt dwp that theyre 'fit for work' this far far outweighs any fraud, and the fraud there is doesnt matter when comparing it to even one death...70 people a week! but perhaps its all a big coincidence.

It seems very odd that a number of these reported deaths were among people who had family nearby.

This was done in order to reduce the 'official' figure of those claiming unemployment benefit.
You could happily spend your while working life doing heavy manual labour, but if you got made redundant, if you're over 50 in this country with no skills at all, you'll be lucky to find another job.
This means you could be officially unemployed for up to 15 years, which of course, is no good for govt figures.
You'll find that your high figure of returners to work (chucked off incapacity benefit) was more than likely most of this group.
They only have to hold a job down for a week, get sacked, and they're back on JSA, but not incapacity benefit, hence the lower figure for claimers.

Take a random sample of 300,000 people, and around 70 a week of that sample will die every week.

This poor woman, a former nurse who suffered chronic pain in her back after an accident at work, in her hand after a dog bite, and partial blindness due to a head injury, took her life after the DWP axed her incapacity benefit after a one-question work capability assessment. The question? “Can you get on a bus?”
The coroner’s verdict was suicide but we should all know that she would not have taken her life if her Atos assessor and the DWP had recognised the seriousness of her condition. They may well suggest that Ms Harris had mental instability that led her to suicide – shouldn’t the assessor have identified that?
Responsibility clearly lies with the Atos assessor, with the company that employed this person, with the DWP for distributing the (clearly inadequate) rules they followed and with the government ministers who approved and enforced those rules.
The charge should be corporate manslaughter and the evidence is irrefutable. Here’s the Western Daily Press report to prove it:

Devastated Jacqueline pleaded with the government workers, explaining she was waiting for a complex operation, but she was ignored.
Her sister added: “She knew she wasn’t going to get any help. She was waiting for a review date for an appeal. I knew she wasn’t going to wait till this date.”

“Everything was an effort and she was in serious pain.
“She detested her existence. Disempowered, she wanted to die.”

atos did not get the sack - wrong. They pulled out of the original assessments owing to lack of viable profits, how very caring of them, however, they now assess people for pip instead.

How remarkably coincidental that every single case has come relatively shortly after assessments, I would have to read up again about time period for above lady, and there's always a possibility she had had enough, tho i believe the decision over benefits could have still been the final straw...the others were t anything like so long. 28 Nov 2014 — Today the government published its response to the Work and Pensions Select Committee’s recommendations for ESA. The committee adopted one of our Fit for Work campaign asks in calling for people to be paid while they wait for a second opinion on their ‘fit for work’ assessment. You added 15,350 voices to this by signing our petition.
We’re really disappointed that the government has failed to take this opportunity to address this situation. They will continue not to pay people during ‘mandatory reconsideration’.
The government’s failure to help sick and disabled people get the support they need is unacceptable. The next government needs to make urgent changes to fit for work tests and ensure no one claiming ESA is left without financial support whilst challenging an assessment decision.
Please tell your MP that you want them to commit to ending this unfair policy in their party’s manifesto for 2015:

We’re really disappointed that the government has failed to take this opportunity to address this situation. They will continue not to pay people during ‘mandatory reconsideration’.
The government’s failure to help sick and disabled people get the support they need is unacceptable. The next government needs to make urgent changes to fit for work tests and ensure no one claiming ESA is left without financial support whilst challenging an assessment decision.

Whilst there are some people who don't have anybody there are plenty of them who have been left to their own devices by their family who then throw up their hands when something goes wrong. Joking aside. I partly agree. I have been one of the biggest critics of the fact that no bankers were slammed in prison and apart from a couple of high profile examples the MP's were left unmolested for their detestable law breaking. They are in a position where they set the example and that example is greedy, grasping and rancid. I don't agree about people who avoid tax. That is our duty. Our responsiblity is to comply with the law. It is politicians who frame the law. Any blame for what people do to avoid paying tax lies with the politicians. As long as people don't evadetax then they do nothing wrong.
However, having said all that it doesn't mean that the attempts to get to grips with those who abuse the benefits system shouldn't proceed. As voters it is our prerogative to throw out the politicians who abuse the system or who haven't brought the bankers to book. If we don't do that then we only have ourselves to blame.

It is a waste of money to put us through them and the stress caused can make our conditions worse - we are not likely to be miraculously cured are we? Or does IDS see Atos or Capita as a form of the Messiah. I would dearly love to get back to being a Practice Nurse but no-one is interested and I am so depressed because I now feel on the scrap heap and hate having to receive benefits. If I lose my DLA (PIP) I will also lose my car which has been adapted to use with hand controls as I cannot feel the pedals with my feet. I will then become isolated and housebound and potentially another suicide statistic (or should that be manslaughter at the hands of DWP?)

If I lose my DLA (PIP) I will also lose my car which has been adapted to use with hand controls as I cannot feel the pedals with my feet. I will then become isolated and housebound and potentially another suicide statistic (or should that be manslaughter at the hands of DWP?)

I don't begrudge the GENUINELY disabled getting such handouts but I've seen too many taking the p&ss and going for a bafta in an effort to more of my taxes in their hands so I'm all for checking people.
The people who take the p&ss are the ones who should feel most guilty as they're the ones scr&wing the system to the detriment of those who are actually entitled to help.
