The Billy Fury Story

Have seen this show and also seen Billy Fury live, in this show it was Colin Gold (from Stars In Their Eyes) who was Billy Fury, he was pretty good.  But Fury on stage was electric and Gold is just a pretty good tribute singer.

When he got together with this group on the tribute show, The Tornados, first of all they billed themselves as Billy Fury's original backing group.  But they were not the originals at all, they were Billy's own band who he got together in the 70's when he was going to make a comeback.  Sadly it didn't happen because he was so ill and died. 

As a tribute to Fury it wasn't a bad show at all, and Billy Fury was the nearest thing Britain had to Elvis.

And he did buy that racehorse as you mentioned, he also made a film about a horse with Amanda Barrie called I've Gotta Horse.  By that stage Fury had sold out a bit by switching to more light entertainment stuff and never matched the brilliance of his early years.

Weren't the Tornados or Tornadoes famous in their own right in the 60s. Telstar ?

^ Yeah, The original Tornados were an instrumental group formed by Record Producer Joe Meek in early 60's as a backing team for stars such as Billy Fury and John Leyton.  But they were famous in their own right and their biggest hit was Telstar. 

There is a very good film on DVD called TELSTAR, it's the story of the group and Joe Meek, James Corden plays the drummer. Kevin Spacey also in it.

he was another member of the long list of stars managed by Larry Parnes, if they had a weird name chances were Larry was the manager.

Parnes managed/re-christened Tommy Steele,Marty Wilde and,slightly more unexpectedly,Georgie Fame. He was gay and only...er...handled handsome young men.

Lovely, talented, compassionate self-effacing man. Cared a lot about animals and their welfare. Deserved a much longer life. RIP

Joe Meek got Heinz to dye his hair blonde to make him stand out in the group, never had much talent but he would do anything to be famous - and was one of the young men who Meek 'handled'.  Was his regular partner for a long time.

In his flat to get the best sound effects Joe Meek would record stars singing in the toilet and things like that.  Fury's manager was also gay like Meek, but Fury was straight and never comfortable with the gay advances.  In that film Telstar, there is one scene where Meek is trying to get Billy Fury round to his flat, and James Corden says, "I don't think Billy Fury wants to be singing Halfway To Paradise in your toilet !"

I know Meek died young in strange circumstances. Didn't something similar happen to his boyfriend ?

Great YouTube clip TambnourineMan, seen it before it's one of his later performances when  he was coming towards the end of his hits, (think he had about 29 chart entries but never had a No. 1 ).  Unfortunately a lot of his earlier TV shows have been wiped, like Thank Your Lucky Stars and 6 5 Special etc..

"THERES ALSO A STATUE OF HIM IN LIVERPOOL NEAR THE DOCKS"  Yep, overlooking the mersey.  And once in their very early days The Beatles auditioned once to be his backing group - when they were called The Silver Beatles and Stu Sutcliffe was the bass player.  But Fury's manager wanted them to audition again without Sutcliffe, Lennon objected and that was that.  Also a pic of John Lennon at the audition asking Billy Fury for his autograph.

In his final years before he died young he was declared bankrupt. Billy Fury always blamed his manager Larry Parnes for the problem, as in the early days, Parnes paid him a wage but did not take care of the tax.
