Help with sending an email. Please!

There is probably an option to turn off emoticons. Sorry if that seems unhelpful but here is a much better answer:

Do not type (6) -- because the danger is that whoever receives the email will be using equally bad software, so it will be turned back into an emoticon at their end.

Why not type six

can you use (six)? Or put a couple of spaces in it ( 6 )?

I know it seems weird, but the (6) is actually quite important.
perhaps a space, as you say, Ted, is the way forward.

As for turning them off, I can't find a way to do it.
Your point about the receiver seeing the emoticon instead of the number is a good one, ramruma.

He's TRYING to use (vi), that's the problem!

study, try inserting a backspace after the emoticon and then deleting the emoticon... there must be a better way but you might find that workable with for now

alternatively, write the whole email in notepad or a similar text editor and then just copy & paste into the body of the email

The proper solution is as follows:

Options
- Mail
  -  Compose

then uncheck the box for converting special key strokes to emoticons

I've only got 7

3 with Orange, 3 with Yahoo and 1 with G-mail

Not used Windows Mail since I first came on the net years ago, can't recall what it was called then.

only 7? surely you have to have a different one for each chitchat account? 

Windows Live Mail wasn't around years ago, it replaced outlook express, which was much better imo

None of those seem to exist on my Live Mail screen, badger.

Hi mate, a really good free email is Mail.com, I've just checked and studyform@mail.com is available. so is studyform@myself.com is as well.There are dozens of addresses you can choose from and you can have many others on the same account if you want some you can  change or throw away.
