hating all this wearing poppies business - all worn by celebrities ,footballers ,television presenters , the Royals ,camp chefs ,pop stars - you name it - anything so theyre not seen in a bad light by the Poppy police .
Football kits with sewn in poppies (next to a Wonga advert) erghhhhhhhh ! Almost sickening to watch . What next ? a rememberance parade with SPORTS DIRECT sponsorship -can't be far away folk who do good deeds MOST of the year maybe don't need to wear a poppy ? generous good deed folk don't want to be TOLD what to do and how to behave by the media and the system either you put a pound in the box and leave it at that or you don't ,maybe also to go to a service to pay respects maybe esp if you had family who served in the great war if that is how you prefer . |

Maybe I should have waited till tomorrow, but as it's the words of a soldier.... ------------------------ [i]ThirtyEightSpecial The article is about the Royal Marines, but I'm an American, and as such I've only experienced this with the US military, so that's what I'll talk about. I'm not sure how to say these things delicately, so please bare with me. Soldier worship is a recruiting tool, first and foremost. The benefit there is obvious; you get impressionable young people to sign up to do something that, objectively, is a horrible idea most of the time. However, it's also a social tool. By social tool I mean that its powerful propaganda that instills certain ideas about war in the general citizenry. Roughly, it goes something like this: soldiers are honorable heros = what soldiers do is honorable = the military is honorable = war is honorable = otherwise unforgivable government action is unquestionable. That's obviously a really simplistic way of saying it, but that's the end result. It creates war apologists. Most discussions about the ills of war will be shouted down as if you're slandering a religion. Anti-war and anti-imperialism were strong sentiments after Vietnam. The government obviously had a problem with that, but with the burgeoning information age, it was difficult to convince people that war was some how ok. Instead, they pick the smallest instrument of war, the soldier, build a hero myth and kick the propaganda into high gear. The result is that they can still make unforgivable wars and people will largely support it at first, the ranks are staffed and in the end there are very few protests. You can even see people mentally grappling with this saying "I support the troops, but not the war". An interesting side effect of this is that some young men join the military believing the myth and eventually realize they're actually doing something horrible. It causes massive depression when it's far too late. And so you see soldier suicide rates skyrocket. In the end you just have to look at the VA to see that the government doesn't believe their own myth. I went to the Tower to see the poppies today, with my young daughter. Needless to say it was packed. One of my first thoughts after arrival was to make sure we weren't anywhere near any Asian fellas wearing backpacks. Then it dawned on me that I couldn't see a single non white person amongst the thousands of people interested in the event, which was kind of bizarre in London.
The poppies don't glorify war, they do the opposite. They signify the huge and senseless loss of life and the suffering endured. Wearing a poppy is a mark of compassion and understanding towards those still alive who were directly affected by the war. It might bring some perspective, understanding and gratitude to people living in much more fortunate times, which arguably wouldn't be the case if these young men hadn't fought so bravely. |

..Clydebank..I visited the tower last week and experienced the same.I remember passing the remark to my misses..there were literally thousands of people yet just the odd one or two non white..what does that tell you? |

At any of these celebrations in London , Diamond Jubilee , Mayors Show etc never does the huge crowds look like a multicultural wasteland .
I think large chunks of the indigenous population are so fed up of the destruction of the Britain of only a few decades ago , cannot get enough of these events. |

Sica Dan You are right Sica, a great many Commonwealth soldiers died for this country in 2 World Wars Any Nation which does not honour it's war dead, scarcely deserves to survive |
