was going to say postal orders until Clydebank did. Used to enter comps, send in letters and cartoons to comics as a kid. The prize was nearly always a postal order, which for me really took the edge off the glory.

I seem to remember a lot of smog from coal fires and a brown shellac coating (sticky) on all the post war furniture made of balsa wood. Very grim up north. I think the shellac film was a mixture of cigarette smoke and chip fat.
Cardboard Suitcases too. Everyone had them. pvc raincoats - women got see through ones. old bakelite radios that used double d batteries. transistor radios. sweat trap Kagool coats. these are a few of my favourite things....  kipper ties.
