The Soweto Uprising in 1976

The apartheid government decided that schools in Soweto should be taught in the South African white language of afrikaans when previously they were taught in English.

The schoolchildren protested as their teachers didn't even speak that language.

On the morning of June 16th 10,000 schoolchildren wearing their school uniforms went on a march.
They sang songs of protest.

They were met with police who fired live rounds into them.

Later journalists were prevented by the police from entering the townships.
