Should you tip taxi drivers?

so het got 50 p tip

thats cheap taxi , 10 mile for me on £20 on the button private hire

Always haggle with taxi drivers.They carry on a bit when you do ,but they enjoy it really.

my local run is £3.50 i dont hang about for £1.50 change , when hes waited in me nashing on to tesco for a carry out

No hard and fast rule, imo. Always depends on the individual circumstance as it does in, say, a restaurant .... if the taxi driver / waiter/waitress goes a bit further than strictly demanded by duty, then nothing wrong with say 10% as a gesture of appreciation. If the taxi driver is like the majority of those I have encountered, ie doesn't say a word to me, got a face like thunder etc etc, then why should I pay over and above the fare? This culture of having to tip taxi drivers is reminiscent of the USA culture, where you seem to be expected to tip all and sundry just because they say good morning. I don't understand why so many people get uptight over this issue. Where next, tip the doctor because he has to inject you in the backside and successfully lands the needle squarely in your right buttock?

Never tipped a cabbie in years. If the fare is £15 that is what the cabbie gets.

In business they tip the customer for giving them the work.

I take your point but I think there is a world of difference between a silent cabbie concentrating on his/her work and the miserable sullen g1t I seem to encounter.

i know what you mean , ive had some that moan if they need to stop to pick someone else up even though its getting added to the fare.

i always tip taxi drivers , delivery drivers etc .

probably more so because when i delivered pizzas years back i hardly ever got tipped - so decided i didn't want to be like that - it's not great standing on the doorstep when its damp and 8c in January  while the customer decides to stand and wait  while you're fishing around for loose coppers when it's only something like 7 pence

always remember one generous lady though ,lived on one of the many council estates in town who insisted on a £3- 4 tip every time - lovely smiley lady whose pizza was only around £7 most times -   most wouldn't give you 4 pence like i say

coach i always tip delivery drivers for a different reason , the reason being when you order again if hes happy with your tip hes less likely yo tamper with your food

you get some right mean feckers though , i worked as a kitchen porter and there was 2-3 of us and about 7-8 waiters , all tips got put in a jug ( ones that waiters never pocketed ) and we got a split , one day the waiters went to the manager and said they should get all tips , leaving the kps out,

i can look at this both ways fair enough the waiter is giving the service , but kp is cleaning the person they served dishes , also if the rule to start was waiter keeps tip then no complaint but they tried back stabbing us the feckers , my mate was head chef so so they got told to do one

I used to leave a tip when I picked up a takeaway at the local Indian.
They always made a fuss of me and gave me a drink while I waited.

waiters @re all w@nkers anyway think they are in a great job , we organised a game of football on a sunday with them , but kitchen staff went out and got hammered on satrday night , so waiters where all hanging about the 5-a sides on a sunday morning , whilst we where all sleeping or still  on

never had anything against those who didn't tip other than sometimes it's plain annoying wasting time fiddling about with plastic money bags for such a daft amount of change - customer has every right to their money of course  - but i think if you can make someone a little happier in their job its always good .

of course some will say ,well you don't tip bus drivers etc -which is true  -   i think tipping in most cases (unless service is exceptional)  is just a case of keep the change ,  it makes life that bit easier 

btw - when are we  gonna do away with 1 and 2 pence coins  ?

when half pennies were abolished in 1984 the coin was worth around 2 pence  in todays money

i bet bus drivers wish they got to get tipped , as there must be a load of extra ones in some boxes , not everyone has change

in england do you get change in buses? on first bus you do but not other ones

not that i'm aware - buses have been exact change since i was a wee lad

no idea chaser -  all i know it costs me £1 for me to travel into the centre of town on a Saturday evening  - 3 miles  .

i think they keep the pennies as most them go in charity boxes anyway like if its 99p , you hand over a golden nugget aka £1 coin , then they say your penny and you want a receipt, you then proceed so everyone heres no recipt required and PUT THE CHANGE IN THE BOX  and walk the store like a boss

used to be £1 a few year back then £1.20 , but its same company as trams so prob paying for them

Some of these bus drivers are evil barstewards.
I watched a couple running towards a bus, the front end mind you.
When it had stopped to pick up some passengers, and the driver pulled away with them only a few yards short of the doors.
They stood there flabbergasted that he hadn't waited a couple of seconds for them to get there.
I was amazed as well. I would have reported the nasty basturd if he'd done it across me.

Just booked a trip with another taxi firm:

Friday, three o'clock in the morning. 28.3 miles - £26.

The going rate for that trip is £30.

I know someone who was charged £35 for the same trip five years ago.
Mind you it was late and it was a return trip.

tipping a taxi driver shouldnt be automatic,like any other service if the guy has given good service then tip him if not dont.i had to get a taxi last month to gatwick,heavy case driver waited for me to lift it in boot myself,hardly said a word on way & when i got to airport he didnt even get out of the motor,paid him agreed amount then he said why no tip,i said cos youre a lazy miserable ******.
tipping definitely works sometimes though,used to have a share in a takeaway shop & if the delivery drivers had to take more than one order out at the same time they always used to take the food to the customer who was known to tip first

I remember a taxi driver going mental when one of my mates sh1t his pants on the back seat after a night on the old peculiar. Prior to the taxi I the landlord threw us out and telling my mate to bring his own mop next time.

I got a taxi on Tuesday for the first time in at least fifteen years. From my home to my dentist I was charged £8.40p. I gave the driver nine quid. The traffic was light and I got the same firm to take me home. That little trip cost me £10.20p. I asked why the discrepancy and he didn't have an answer. He settled for a tenner at his own request. I can only think that the geezer put his meter on before picking me up.

I don't mind the money, but I detest getting ripped off.
