Extraordinary case here - seems to have been obsessed with killing this unfortunate woman and didn't care if he was caught. No reports of him doing anything untoward previously. Judges by psychiatrists to be of sound mind.

his mind was sufficiently sound to enable him to choose a 61 year old lady as his victim, funny that he did n't develop a hatred of any of the young, physically fit male teachers....

This filthy piece of detritus apparently struggled to choose between homicide and suicide, should've chosen the latter and caused grief to a lot less people.

Whilst I'm at it, the West Yorkshire police statement today was,to my mind at least, wholly inappropriate - refered to his parents as 'responsible', 'decent' and 'victims' - that may or may not be the case but it was hardly the time or the place. The Chief Superintendent was probably right to praise the actions of those teachers who tried to help Mrs. Maguire but use of words like 'safe' and phrases to the effect of 'keeping her away from further harm' were toe curlingly inadequate.

Don't know why they can't wait for a day or two after sentencing before making a more considered statement as opposed to appearing on the court room steps to do so.

Anyway that's neither here nor there really - RIP Mrs. Maguire

Channel 4 News :

Mr Richardson was keen to show there are, he says, no lessons to be drawn from this appalling episode: “I feel I must reiterate what others have already said repeatedly today that this was an isolated and unprecedented incident and it is not in any way indicative of a wider problem, in this school, or in schools across the region.”

Well – that may be so. But curiously neither he nor the headteacher nor the priest were taking any questions. We were told that in advance.

A decision had been taken. Across school, church and council – no questioning allowed.

This is uncomfortable.

The verdict is passed. Will Cornick is now named.

But whatever Leeds tries to pretend, that is not the end of it, nor should it be. If Leeds wants to be united in writing all this off to a psychopathic episode then that is their prerogative but it should not go unchallenged.

Nothing could have been done to prevent it – that was the police today echoing the school/church/council.

But Cornick had talked openly about a violent attack two months before. He had written on Facebook about killing another pregnant teacher. He’d been bringing alcohol into to school  – so there are questions to be answered.
Report tobermory November 4, 2014 4:14 AM GMT
Cornick remained remorseless as he underwent psychiatric assessment.

He discussed having planned the murder for years, saying: "The killing was always on my mind since year eight, the thought of homicide, murdering her."

The teenager had even taken a bottle of Jack Daniels into school on the day of the murder with the intention of "celebrating" his actions.

"I wasn't in shock, I was happy," he later told a psychiatrist.

"I had a sense of pride. I still do."

The court was told it was clear to witnesses that the teenager was pleased with what he had done and the boy even said "good times" to horrified pupils as he returned to the classroom.

The boy chatted to them "as if nothing had happened", and while in custody he said: "Everything I've done is fine and dandy."

Oh dear...here we go again with the wet liberal view about hanging / punishment in general.

I just do not understand modern thinking about human rights.

Anyone who commits a crime against another person or persons deprives their victim of at least some of their human rights. Even the most minor crime against someone deprives that someone of the right to live peacefully.

Hence, punishment should do the following:

Act as a deterrent to others through depriving the person committing the crime of AT LEAST the same level of human rights the crime deprived the victim of. Therefore, logically, a cold-blooded murder (and in this case it was) has deprived the teacher of her life. Hence, let's deprive the filthy piece of scum of his life - regardless of his age.

Also, as for him being of 'sound mind'. Well, perhaps he was when he was interviewed by these experts but how can he have been when he killed the teacher? Hence, I would suggest that he will never be released because who can tell if he will lapse back into the state of mind he was in when he committed the crime? Thus, the taxpayer is going to be cost millions of pounds for no good reason.

A terrible, terrible case made worse by the posturing of certain officials who couldn't keep their gobs shut but then wouldn't take questions.

in the UK, we seem to have totally lost the art of keeping your mouth shut.....

Apparently the death penalty is not a deterrent.  I have no idea why.  But you see stuff in US where they have the death penalty or some proper harsh penalties, like 50 years plus for a standard murder, in a gang filled godawful prison and you just think why?  Why isnt it a deterrant?  I mean if you told me that bank robbery had no deterrant, I couldnt promise I wouldnt at least be tempted, I mean a year or two's salary for half an hour's work.  Fk the morality of stealing, I would just be saying I promise I wont hurt you, just give me the money, stop crying, I proper promise no one is gonna get hurt because there is literally no deterrant.

I doubt anything would have deterred this nutter, and whatever the official court psychiatrists said, surely he must be a turkey twizzler short of a school dinner because although he planned this murder, he took no precautions against getting recognised and did not try to get away. It's not as if he ambushed her down a dark alley wearing a ski-mask. The sentence is immaterial really -- he belongs in a secure psychiatric hospital for life, not prison for 20 years and then out to stab the next poor sod who crosses his path.

For rational criminals, however, the main factor in a deterrent is the perceived likelihood of getting caught.

An interesting thought.  So to stop all these murders in USA, for instance, we need more cops ensuring they dont get away with it rather than stiff sentences.  Or more cctv cameras and electrical monitoring of people and stuff and tracking what they do.  Like going more toward a police state but without the stiff sentencing.

The view that the death penalty deters is
still the product of belief, not evidence.
The reason for this is simple: over the past
half century the U.S. has not experimented
enough with capital punishment policy to permit
strong conclusions. Even complex econometrics
cannot sidestep this basic fact. The data are
simply too noisy, and the conclusions from any
study are too fragile. On balance, the evidence
suggests that the death penalty may increase the
murder rate
