A local pub I frequented when I was young was next to a police station. Despite this, it was one of the best pubs for "afters" in the area.
One of the guvnor's was a racehorse owning villain. On the face of it a nice bloke, but you would not want to get on the wrong side of him. He had some decent horses
and used to get some great info in the Never So Bold era. There was a raid on the place once and a fair amount of stolen jewellery was found.
One of the gunvor's mates took the rap and served ca. 3-5 years. The bloke who took the rap had a sideline as - a PRIZE fighter. Another apparently very nice bloke
who you would really not want to cross! They used to play kalooki in the pub for big money and used to fleece a German diamond dealer who used to frequent the pub.
They would get him tanked up then take him to the cleaners. He was so loaded that he came back again and again.

We're trying to get our local closed down as it's taking up space that yet another estate agency could occupy.

Not wrong there Stow, where I live the houses were built by the quakers with a covenant that there should never be any pubs. In the 70s 2 were allowed and they've been there until last year when one was turned into a Tesco express. The other one just attracts the people from the estates up the hill and I'll give it a year before it's a Waitrose mini.

Also home to London's first mosque, but they're the nice ones, not in the least bit bitey like the ones in Newham.

Similar situation in Eltham - probably why they're always so wound up.

Two old gayers in the Nottingham Arms (closed down) in Custom House (where Danny Dyer comes from, he's NOT from Canning Town) I used to go in now and again to collect money for a bookie. Every time they saw me, Peter, the short arsed one, used to say 'nice tits'. They weren't tits, they were pecs ffs. Happy

Old bloke called Fred who used to drink in The Star at Manor Park (another pub closed down) Small pub, and if he couldn't find a chair he'd stand by a table start esting raw fish. Chairs became avaiable soon after. Laugh

Old Indian bloke in The White Horse in Poplar (pub may stil be there, no idea) Used to come in Sunday lunchtime sessions only, play the piano and sing in a cockney accent. Go round with his hat after about an hour, cop a nice few quid, and vanish until the following Sunday. If anybody got him a drink it stayed on top of the piano, he never drank one.
