Stranger on the shore... I Googled him a month or 2 ago for this tune and was surprised he was still alive. Sadly not now, RIP.

He'd had loads of ops for bladder cancer and had a stroke so maybe it's a blessing. Loved SOTS as a kid even though it was a bit "square".

RIP...Bernard 'Acker' Bilk.
On 26 May 1962, "Stranger on the Shore" became the first British recording to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 where it was issued by Atlantic Records on the Atco label, but it was quickly followed, on 22 December, by the Tornados' "Telstar", another instrumental. In the pre-rock era, Vera Lynn's "Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart" had reached #1 in 1952, on the shorter "Best Sellers In Stores" survey. After "Telstar", the next British performers to top the U.S. charts were the Beatles, with their first Capitol Records single "I Want to Hold Your Hand". "Stranger on the Shore" was Billboard's #1 single of 1962, and it spent seven weeks atop the "Easy Listening" chart, which later became known as the Adult Contemporary chart.[6] The tune became the second of three "one-hit wonders" named "pop single of the year" by Billboard (the others being 1958's "Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu)" by Domenico Modugno and 2006's "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter. |

Acker Bilk: legendary jazz clarinettist dies aged 85
|
|
By:
Clarinettist Acker Bilk, who personified the trad jazz revival of the 1950s and 60s, has died after a lengthy illness, aged 85.
His most famous number Stranger on the Shore was the UK's biggest selling single of 1962 and made him an international star. Born Bernard Stanley Bilk, he changed his name to Acker - Somerset slang for mate - after learning to play the clarinet in the Army. His last concert was in August 2013. Pamela Sutton, who was Bilk's personal manager for 45 years, said he had "been ill for some time. He was my great friend and his music was legendary." He leaves his wife Jean, daughter Jenny and son Pete. Born in Pensford in Somerset, Bilk tried a number of different careers before borrowing a clarinet and copying recordings of famous jazz musicians while in the Army. He formed his first band in Bristol after his demobilisation. Known for his goatee, bowler hat and fancy waistcoat, Bilk was awarded an MBE in 2001 for services to the music industry. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2000 but recovered and continued to play concerts, the last of which was at the Brecon Festival last year. Bilk told the BBC in a 2012 interview that when he wrote his biggest hit Stranger on the Shore - which was released in 1961 and spent 55 weeks in UK singles chart - he didn't immediately realise it was special. "I didn't think it was much different from any of the rest of it," he said. "It was just a thing that came out of my head, that's all. I didn't sort of work on it or do much at all with it." |

Way before The Cavern Club and The Beatles were famous, it was once more of a jazzy club, Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band use to play there a lot. And Acker was probably the only bloke ever to play the Cavern Club wearing a bowler hat !
In the early 60's it became more a mix of jazz and skiffle and beat groups, and The Cavern also use to promote Riverboat Shuffle Cruises down the Mersey. This was long before The Beatles got famous, and they wore black leathers, and they did the interval spots for Acker Bilk. Sometimes the Captain gave Acker the wheel and he'd be steering the boat while The Beatles were playing. Still got an old record player and huge collection of old vinyl records, Stranger On The Shore was one of the first records I ever bought, and still got it. ![]() |
