Happened to me too Hank about 20 years ago. Nowt wrong with it and it's saved me a fortune not to mention the empty calories and hangovers. These days I just have a glass of wine on birthdays and Christmas day to be sociable but don't miss it at all.

^^^ Hey? Where's the rest of my post?
![]() I'm watching the darts live on ITV4 - (a quick plug for you non horse racing chaps n girls) and came on CC to ask "why do people drink alcohol" only to see Hank with a thread posting a similar question? 30 years of the pub and playing darts culminated in a lifetime of doing both for no other reason than "it's what we dart players do." Booze for breakfast as a livener, then car, coach or train journeys to darts tournaments, sinking more booze cos "it's what we dart players do," and marathon drinking sessions becomes the norm. Long story short, i put the darts away and stopped drinking 5 months ago. Started going to the gym and have lost over 2 stone. My landlord laughed when i said i wanted hot water with a slice of lemon ![]() |

Surprised anyone should need to ask. With more disposable income you can have better food, clothes, a nicer home. car and holidays and can afford to be more generous to kids and grandchildren. Difficult to know how much has been diverted from drink over 20 years but if say £60 a week then that £60,000. Relative to people who also smoke, one could double that. Just makes for a better standard of living provided you don't miss the drug of choice. |

Same happened to me was always going out and though not a massive drinker I could have 8 or 9 on a Saturday night. Then 10 years ago aged 35 I started cutting down, now if I go out then I drive so drink soft drinks and only on trips away do I have a drink. Don't miss it but do miss the fun of my youth.

I quit nearly 2 years after a heavy session at Wetherby races for my dad's 60th in Dec 12. I carried on in the pubs in our town until the early hours of the morning once we got back home, and ended up with a 3 day hangover from hell, and missing 2 days of work.
I went from being in the pub most nights to not going at all unless it was for a meal. The only time I have a drink now is when we go abroad. I've never really missed it. |

You lot have just made the fizz go out of my cider tinnies!
I have had to open a bottle of shiraz instead. ![]() Seriously, good luck to you if you can manage life without, always been a way for relaxing, calming for me and probably always will be. If I got angry off the drink I would never touch it, but it does the opposite for me and I am thankful for that. |
