Is Russell Brand mad?

And Manson is a convicted multi murdering psychopath.

hmmm, contreversial views and a book just hot off the press. hmmm. ??

" 'Russell Brand wants YOU to join the Revolution’ is the pithy way his publishers, Century, put it.

Oddly enough, Century is a part of Penguin Random House, itself a division of the German media conglomerate Bertelsmann and Pearson PLC, the largest education company and book publisher in the world, and owners of the Financial Times. "

Craig Brown reviewing Brand's book...

Plus the book is available through the Amazon tax dodge specialists!

^ as are 100 % of all books published !

You have to laugh Facts. Brand can dream up thoughts of revolution but can not see beyond Amazon to sell his book. So much for Big business vs small business!

Independent publishing via an independent purchase address is not an alternative then? Give to the monopoly giants who the book attacks. Why? because it will create more profit. Deep deep sigh.

I liked this

Seems to me that the book is a missed opportunity to illustrate the very arguments Russell Brand is making. Instead of publishing it the traditional way, he could've tried to set up some sort of profit-sharing initiative, so that the proceeds were distributed fairly between everyone involved: from the paper producers, to the binders, to the marketers, to the writer. It's not a perfect way to achieve fairness, but it's a start, and it would reflect the fact that lots of people play important roles in the process of producing a book, not just the writer and the publisher (who usually cream off all the profit).

Not surprising the guys a hypocritical ****.

Look at the **** videos he produced about the referendum. Had a dig at the casino style financially reckless big banks then a minute later tried to dismiss any financial concerns people might have about their mortgages becoming owned by a foreign bank by being patronising and talking babyish and implying that such concerns were down to racism.

From The Guardian comments section : "The guy is a Poundland Stephen Fry dressed as Stevie Nicks."

AG

Fair point about deciding which vehicle to sell the book through. Not sure whether that would be his decision or the publishers. Depends what the profits from the book sale are going to be used for. Could be they are to be used for ' good causes'  as RB has stated he's not interested in money anymore. In which case Amazon would be the one to make the highest level of sales.

But I agree there is a dichotomy

Vote UKIP to stop the madness.

Note to Velasquez

Not all Guardian readers are the ' full shilling '

What exactly will voting for UKIP do ?

Note to Facts : Is anybody?

Facts, i know people on Brand`s wave length that have suggested to me that we should get rid of money and start bartering between ourselves again as a system. Hardly progressive is it? They would be happier and more spiritually in harmony living in goat sheds at the end of allotments after all the land is taken back off the landed gentry and shared out for communal usage amongst the people.

Unfortunately you have to work within the system, raging against the machine with a false sense of purpose and hanging on the words of a dreamer who has the option of a very comfortable existence will lead more people into cardboard boxes.

Raging  against the machine, has - through the centuries - produced enormous changes. It often starts with just one voice.

Brand may be mad but nowhere near as mad as whoever wrote or believes the Green party manifesto.

The Green manifesto ticks many of the boxes of Brand`s awakening Dotch. In fact Brand wants spiritual awakening to take it beyond that manifesto so hard to know Brand can be less mad.

He seems to think the people can pull together in harmony, he will say there is no need for any authority, rise people, create Utopia, i will see you later!! Off back to LA for a bit!

Brand reminds me a bit of the HARLEQUIN figure in the Harlan Ellison short story, " 'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman."

Interesting to read that he is not happy doing "big" Hollywood movies...not happy sh@gging around Hollywood...not happy doing anything, really...he is a manic malcontent, too agitated to look at a graph or listen attentively to another person's opinion. It was noticeable that he seemed to run out of energy in the Newsnight studio, around the 12mins. mark of the interview.

He is a dilettante...

"A person who cultivates an area of interest, such as the arts, without real commitment or knowledge;

synonyms: dabbler, potterer, tinkerer, trifler, dallier..."

He is also a jobbie weecha.

Once the novelty wears off, it will tick the hard box and he will be off again. Like someone who can`t be arsed to learn scales on the guitar but wants to play like Hendrix, he has the headband though.

Not surprised, he had arrived at the Newsnight studios direct from a London theatre where he had been interviewed live ( shown simultaneously In cinemas around the uk) for c 2 hrs. Prior to that he had been campaigning with and talking to members of a group about to be evicted from their homes.

Not a bad days work for what some would call a lazy, idle , selfish weirdo.

Facts, are you his valet?

All of a sudden, Russell Brand is a paragon of the "Protestant work ethic."

Doesnt sound like a days work to me.

"There's poor Russell, driving himself to the brink of exhaustion for OUR benefit..."

He had a fookin' contractual obligation with Random House to provide a manuscript of 100,000 words - and the book costs £20, it's not being handed out in the street, for free, like an election pamphlet.

The book is full of wacky filler, like tobacco that's been laced with dogsh1t. It's a 10,000 word crap student dissertation padded out to get a fat cheque.

When poor Russ is working he can`t resist staring hopelessly at the big clock on the wall, the pain of talking is obvious. He wasn`t put on this earth to be a talker, he could have been a contender...if only he had listened to his parents...All he has left is his talking 2 hours here, 15 mins there.... blisters on larynx is an occupational hazard. The years are taking there toll, it`s a disgrace.

Brand is entitled to take the piss out of the rest of the world, it is the worlds fault for allowing it to happen. Why the BBC indulges this clown is beyond me,self publicist able to write his own PR free.

Yeh - he's doing all this for his own publicity. Of course he is, There can't be another explanation, can there ?

I think he is genuinely going through an `awakening` process which millions of the named `truthers` have also gone through. He is still trying to digest what is being revealed to him by his Occupy connections. It`s a rush of blood to head, and it also feeds him for material to voice, he is a voice. The messiah complex runs as deep as anyones.

He is sincere to a point, as long as he is causing a reaction and stick it up the dusty institutions. Fair play, but i wouldn`t expect him to stick around for long. It will be a complicated process.

I think he's very sincere, and passionate about what he's saying. He is famous and therefore has a platform off of which he can put forth his ( mostly others) facts and figures. He recognises that he is just a vehicle through which (hopefully ) the underlying message will be heard, picked up and acted upon in ways that will have an exponential impact.

He will change absolutely nothing.  I bet he doesnt give his money away either.

cant say I agree with everything he says, but its a different voice in a sea of rampant capitalist & anti muslim / immigration bile.

Dont understand the hate for him. Could it be establishment / media dont like what he says?

or he has a new book out

I dont think people hate him. In fact people are laughing at him a lot more than they ever have before. His Newsnight sketches are hilarious.

THOMAS PIKETTY was mentioned in the Newsnight interview. Has anyone actually mentioned Piketty on this thread yet...up to now...?

So why not just forget that an a$$ like Brand exists and go and get the Piketty book, "Capital in the Twenty-First Century."

"Pay your tax you sl@gs" cried rustle brand while pushing his book. Published by the behemoth Pearson group, registered in Luxembourg! Hahaha whatacunt.

The naivety is staggering,a self publicist with a millionaire house in USA and denouncing the establishment, always an easy figure to attack ? You have to be barmy to fall for all that. AT least Citizen Smith was plausible !

Why do people think , you have to be in rags and penniless if you have a serious message. Does it make it a difference. RB gets criticised because he's chauffeured around. What do you want ? If he rode  around on a bike would it make what he debates more credible ?

i know he wants a revolution but he doesnt seem to know what he wants at the end of it to me

Economic choices are no longer in the hands of the voters, the mega banks & multi nationals are in control. We vote in governments who then manage us for a period of time until they are voted out and then the next change of brand comes along to manage us. We are managed, we are not represented.

The system has been manufactured for us to believe we have democracy but if we can not be represented then the who notion of democracy is an illusion. Our government is in the hands of international capital, we can`t change the way we are represented unless we find an alternative society to live in, we need to make a new one.

Heavy man.

Clement Attlee was "chauffeured" around the hustings by his wife. The car would stop and Attlee would open the door and immediately deliver about 400 words of perfect prose to the waiting journalists, whatever the question. His wife would then do the Times crossword while Attlee gave a "soapbox" speech.

Attlee was a serious man with serious policies. His govt. was a truly great govt. but it was not trivial, clownish or malicious...

As Ally Ross wrote in the Sun, Brand's hypocrisy is overwhelming..."Brand's the environmental campaigner with a chauffeur driven Merc. The multi-millionaire Hollywood resident who mocks Evan Davis for his bourgeois lifestyle. The anti-royalist who backs the Royal Charter to curb the powers of the press."

Those Brand podcasts are also edited by Johann Hari, a seriously discredited journalist.

there's a hole in my shoe and its letting in water

It's like the firewall between Big Brother and Newsnight is down and the political discourse has been invaded by a feckin' BB-obsessive troll on speed.

Yeh, let's all read The Sun, that'll change things . Ffs !!

Very excited about MILEY CYRUS being on Newsnight next week, discussing her new booky wooky woo, "Twerk Yo Revolution Dude."

There are rumours that Emily Maitlis might join Miley for some suggestive - yet utterly spiritual and revolutionary - twerking at the conclusion of the interview.

Just for you Vellie baby. (p.s. he is a film producer, not a politician).

cheers for the heads up ^^ ill put in my diary

Brand doesnt seem to extend his views on tax avoiders to the company who paid him a large sack of money for his book. Typical hypocrisy.

Ta, Li doll...

PARKLIFE!

You’re all beautiful, both inside and out. You mustn’t worry about anything; nothing is important except finding love within yourself and being all honourable and glorious and beautiful. Take things dead slowly ’cause nothing you can attain externally has value, only that which is within yourself already is valuable. PARKLIFE!

We all need something to help us unwind at the end of the day. You might have a glass of wine, or a joint, or a big delicious blob of heroin to silence your silly brainbox of its witterings but there has to be some form of punctuation, or life just seems utterly relentless. PARKLIFE!

Honesty has always been an integral part of my operation, really. PARKLIFE

We must not be scumbox children of capitalistic condescension, eco-skinheads of raging ferment - our prioritization of acceptable advances in the cosmos must never be codified by farty controllers of the dollar Coliseum. PARKLIFE!

“Rebel children, I urge you, fight the turgid slick of conformity with which they seek to smother your glory.” Parklife!!

I think many of the boundaries that convention has placed upon us are arbitrary, so we can fiddle with them if we fancy. Gravity’s hard to dispute, and breathing, but a lot of things we instinctively obey are a lot of old tosh. PARKLIFE!

Like a rebel hedgehog on speed we must always deny the parasites of complacency. PARKLIFE!

Most assuredly negative. The Rambunctious comedian is quintessentially poignant and lacks only the capacity to investigate his vast linguistic capacity in reflective contemplation of his navel.
He is a mammary gland.

Russell has a cunning plan!

Excellent show Facts, strangely enough the theme tune is always the tune that i start whistling for no apparent reason.

We all have a whistling tune right?

"Give the likes of Baldrick the vote and we'll be back to cavorting druids, death by stoning and dung for dinner..."

Sounds like the police had to rescue the multi-millionaire from anti-capitalist demonstrators.

i beseech you sirs to stop this constant citation to the green esplanades of this fair and pleasant land.

bullseye

I think the "bullseye" has been scored by whoever designated "PARKLIFE!" to Brand's rants...the reason it's attained "meme" status so quickly is because it has hit the mark so perfectly...in fact, it's a proper fookin' bullseye!

Brand's use of the English language is pretentious and appalling. Many of the passages in his writing could be used as parodies of the(bad)examples cited in Orwell's "Politics and the English Language."

Pretentious diction, verbosity, using flowery language to disguise or evade clear meaning, etc.

Brand's use of the English language is pretentious and appalling. Many of the passages in his writing could be used as parodies of the(bad)examples cited in Orwell's "Politics and the English Language." PARKLIFE.

Oh you...sheep!

Or more accurately, you PARROT!

David Fishwick - don't you understand that I went out of my way there to post in "plain" English, without the use of dead or inappropriate metaphors? This is actually quite difficult, as Orwell points out in his essay.

Perhaps you need to read "Politics and the English Language" by George Orwell, which is available for free, online...

Exhibit A -

"This attitude of churlish indifference seems like nerdish deference contrasted with the belligerent antipathy of the indigenous farm folk, who regard the hippie-dippie interlopers, the denizens of the shimmering tit-temples, as one fey step away from transvestites."

Fishwick or Facts - could you please have a go at explaining this passage by Brand? What is he on about?

He is on about the sensationalist interpretation of new wave thinkers man. How the hippy movement at the time in the 60`s was misunderstood and created fear for the hillbilly creed man.

Just like Rock and Roll did before that man, with Elvis hip shifting devil flapdoodle.

Yes, thee...um...the...um...proto-Nietzschean flapdoodle thingy...how did I NOT SEE THAT??

Facts and Fishy - have you bought your Russell Brand REVOLUTION T-shirts yet? They're only £35 each on Russell's website...I bought two this morning : One for the Rumanian lass who sells the Big Issue in our shopping centre, and one for myself. I can think of no better way to begin a revolution.

Don't know about Facts, but I haven't. Got one of these for you though:

Buy a plain one from Oxfam for £2 then scribble that message on with a permanent marker -- that's the artisan revolution, brother!

Good news. The rescued him in time for him to make the Made in Dagenham musical.

Is Russell Brand mad? ........if you even feel the need to ask that question - I would question your own sanity...................(with respect!).

He's not mad. Hth

To be fair he is no madder than this fella.

Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it.
John Lennon

But this geezer was deemed a genius and a philosopher cos he could write a good tune! Get playing that harp Russ!

I don't think he's mad but anyone who thinks he's acting purely out of altruism is.

I think he genuinely does care about the underclass and less fortunate in our society.

I think the underclass are quite well cared for in this society Facts. Even under the etonians putting the squeeze on, there is plenty of support on offer.

Brand is casting his phylosphy globally, where capitalism is eating up the planet, and heating up. Yet we still enjoy the fruits of capitalism and would be lost without certain perks, even the underclass.

.....the underclass are quite well cared for ....!?

When the old and infirm are dying , through lack of food and heat
When thousands of children of the poorest in society die before they're 5 years old.
When thousands ( even those on work ) have to use foodbanks in order to survive,
When thousands sleep sleep rough ,unable to find shelter, even in the doss houses.

Millions in this country are below the poverty line.

Go tell these they are quite well cared for !

Millions are below the relative poverty line Facts, but obesity is still on the rise.

Yes the gulf between the rich and those at the bottom is widening, pensioners need their homes insulating, but do individuals like yourself or myself or Brand visit the pensioners in need? Surely as it is not just down to the system where that fails.

Yes the NHS is overrun (Where will exponential growth take us Facts?) do we keep on growing, do we stop the immigration or do we adopt a breeding policy? The room is not getting any bigger, so the countryside will have to go, concrete jungles for progress? not for me.

There are too many people Facts, how will the revolution correct that? Where is Utopia?

Just to add

Brand could do himself a favour by campaigning to the plight of our elderly this winter. Ignite some social compassion, i think it would be a winner.

He is helping. He has suggested they turn off their answering machines to save electricity.

The predicted growth in population is said to reach c75million by 2037. This is driven by increase in net migration, and by changes in birth/ death rates. Interestingly it is calculated that 40 % of births in the UK are unplanned. This increase will mean we have to plan for and change the way we live, in order that the necessary resources are available and that our infrastructure can support such growth. I assume these aspects are being addressed by relevant experts in their field.

I haven't the answer to your questions. Other than change is required, if we are to make better use of the resources we have, which include, power, money and a desire to create a more fairer society, where this is not the huge gap between the ' haves and Have nots ' . Unless steps are taken to redistribute  the wealth in this country, I see an increasing growth in the fabulously rich and the desperately poor, and in the 21st Century in such a country like ours, is shameful.

To your other point, ( and relative to the above) , I agree. Again it is shameful that we allow our elderly to suffer the hardship and indignity of going without adequate food and/or heating, so that thousands will die this winter as a result. Whilst at the same time £billions are spent on promoting the Xmas festivities. Our sense of values and what is important are being lost in the wave of greed and profit for the few at the cost of the many. It has always been so, but it has to change.

Counter productive that advice Crisp, what if they miss the message from Scottish Power telling them to turn the electric fire down to 1 bar before the meter runs out?

Great post the Facts.

Russell Brand's version of Parklife (he's done his own one)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dAFbpk9_GM

Very good. Would be better if he had a Centra carrier bag on his head though.

Next week he'll get into a rap battle with Daniel Radcliffe

Mad or not, all I know is he's bagged more stunners than I've had hot wanks. Whether this is pertinent to the requisites of high office I'm not sure but before passing judgement I'd like to see the bedroom stats of the other party leaders.

Very good response from RB

Here he is doing his bit for the fire brigade, an insight into how the mainstream media choose to ignore those who want to protect important public services.
