The Investor's Chronicle is a useful publication .

Of course you must avoid their tips just use the relevant information to formulate your own opinion.
A useful tip for the "penny share" is to calculate the asset / share . Not bullshit assets but the real variety such as land, buildings and steelstock. If the asset per share is greater than the price to be paid they are worthy of further investigation.

I used a bank share dealing account which was easy enough. Not sure how it compared with commission etc, I could have been ripped off for all I know.

unless you want dividend income there is no point in buying shares; if you're just looking for growth in their value, buy the spread with IG or a similar firm - any gains are tax free, whereas if you hold physical stock you are liable for cgt on any gains

unless you hold them in an isa

at about £15k a year it should cover most novices

You'll do well to get a gain that would take you over the capital gains threshold in today's environment. Many of the ISA's have an annual charge. http://www.youinvest.co.uk/ is one that does not, except for a custody charge for funds.

http://www.svssecurities.com/ is one of the cheaper ones
