We had to bomb because Gadaffi was threatening to go door to door to kill innocent civilians as i recall. We had minute by minute coverage. then once he was dead.... It must be a paradise there now right?

over the last few years dozens of aid workers from all over the world have been murdered /kidnapped. It's not a new thing. Being on a humanitarian mission no longer means you have a safe passage like it once did. Probably the opposite - you are seen as easy targets.

A lot of charities need to think long and hard about their strategies, and where volunteers are placed.

Could do with Cameron advising brits to stay away for a while imo. Its incredibly brave for anyone to go there and help but probably not necessary for nationals of a country that invaded the area 10 years ago. Surely there are millions of good people in the middle east who can help the middle east while everyone cools off a bit.

Mr Hennig and the other aid workers who travel there to help people knowing the dangers are extra ordinary people and ordinary people like us find it hard to fathom them out. One has to admire their courage.

Given the ISIS method of not giving a toss about what anybody says, anybody who goes out there to help is a sandwich short of a picnic, even more so if they have a worrying family at home here in the UK.

Very sad news. Was always likely to happen once we voted for military action in parliament. I think we have to face up to the likelihood of the other hostages being lost as well. We need cool heads, a considered strategy and then after all due consideration knock the bejeesus out of these barbarians.

I've always been a lily livered liberal that most would probably despise on here.

But there is something about a beheading on film like this that chills the soul.
The perpetrator has basically said..."I have no respect for human life,I may as well be working in an abbatoir".

So... should we respect his life?

The government portray ISIS as an existential threat. I think this is hyperbolic but if we take them at their word then we really do need to do something about our muslim population for our own protection. Some will see this is racism but that is merely an attempt to close down debate and is the refuge of the scoundrel.

The last time we faced an existential threat was during WW2 and fleeing Jews from Europe were interned on the Isle of Wight if memory serves me right. Food for thought.

So the government need to be straight with the people of this country. Either ISIS are a rag bag bunch of barbarians a long way away fighting a Sunni/Shiite civil war with plenty of random barbarity thrown in to stir the pot or we do indeed face this supposed threat which our government seems intent on telling us is fact as they whittle away our civil liberties.

So which is it and if the latter why aren't they making tough choices which someone like Churchill wasn't afraid to make? I'm sure moderate muslims would support this policy if indeed the threat is so grave.

You hear many saying that one never hears Muslims in this country condemning the likes of ISIS but I`m sure they do so in private. To do so publicly would be committing suicide. I don`t think internment would be feasible. Apart from that, the Isle Of Wight couldn`t hold them all.

A few thoughts on this:

1.    Once a group starts beheading UK civilians, we have to take the fkers out.
2.    Extending IS’s/ISIS's actions to all Muslims shows lazy thinking, innumeracy (no. of terrorist killings vs. number of Muslims etc.), and some sort of frustration.
3.    There’s no conspiracy here, but the British and US governments might well be secretly licking their lips at this.

You could fit millions on the Isle Of Wight.

Joking aside my point isn't really about the muslims. It's at least partially about calling the government's bluff when they embark on yet another expedition having ramped up the propaganda. People should be raising these issues when they go overboard about these threats. Sure we are at risk of some terrorist activity as we were during the 70's and 80's with the IRA. Life went on pretty nuch normally as it should and we should look at this with a clear head. If the situation really is as dire as government suggests then bringing in such parallels from history shows them up for being liars, wimps or feeble.

Just to clarify EEO, I wasn't really addressing your post. I just don't like the widespread, knee-jerk "f*cking Muslims" reaction since it's obviously more complicated than that. The government's stance, past and present, is clearly a factor.

Very much doubt that this murderous criminal will ever be captured. Will probably be sent on his way to his imaginary paradise by a drone strike or a military hit squad.

A few thoughts...

1) killing of aid workers is I'm afraid nothing new. You tube videos are though and hence the wider outrage. I worked for a charity years ago in a far eastern nation and had to sign a disclaimer.. The charity (which was undercover using a different name) would have abandoned me if I was caught. That was the arrangement and I was 'happy' to sign.

2) Eid is going on this weekend. The ritual beheading of lambs by members of the public who in the sight of their children decapitate the animals. Muslims aren't as squemish as the rest of us..

3) A friend in Morrocco emailed me yesterday said that hearing the screams of the lambs and seeing all the blood in the streets was more like 1314 AD not 2014 AD

4) We decapitate people but not with knives or swords. We used bombs/missiles. The cheapest of which on a Tornado is I believe £30k. Missiles do a lot worse than take one's head off.. This NEVER gets reported despite many of the victims being civilians....

5) Spoke with an old gent this morning who felt sad for Alan but made the point that we WERE bombing them...so not sure what we could expect...
