Toby Jones takes the lead role in this feature-length fact-based drama from writer Peter Bowker (Occupation, Eric and Ernie), inspired by the life of Neil Baldwin. Although he was diagnosed as having learning difficulties, Neil has constantly confounded people's expectations during a colourful career that has seen him work as a circus clown and a kit man for Stoke City, and recently led to him being awarded an honorary degree by Keele University in recognition of his contributions to campus life. Just as Neil doesn't like to be labelled, the drama also mixes biopic, musical and fantasy elements to tell this unique story. Gemma Jones, Tony Curran and Nicholas Gleaves also star, while Gary Lineker appears as himself

This is quite an irritating watch, imo.

I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's because he's a not vey nice character.
Report STUDYFORM September 25, 2014 10:30 PM BST
Or perhaps it's a tiny bit too far fetched?
Trying to be a bit too "Feel good" too.

Did anyone else enjoy this?
I watched it all, but somehow didn't.

Not bad.

Excellent stuff. Agree re "far fetched" but then his life has been exactly that!!  I liked the way they got the "man himself" to counter the myth bits.  Very clever. Toby needs lessons in "Pottris" but then the man is from Newcastle.u.L.

Ahead of the programme I read a few articles on Neil Baldwin and for some reason this story made me laugh.

He was getting a lift home one night just after midnight and he got the driver to take a detour past Nigel Gleghorns house to check he was in bed.

What a tremendous programme which brought tears to my eyes. His chicken outfit was priceless and I loved the bit when his mum was telling Macari that Neil wasn't intelligent and he responded that it didn't matter as they were footballers and intelligence was in short supply. The Rennie cameo was terrific but my abiding memory is what a nice guy Macari is.

All those stories were basically true, if a bit condensed in time terms. I've known him 25 years, and wish I'd been a bit more Lou Macari. Toby Jones gets him spot on.
