School Crossing Patrols - wtf - and my question to you

The parents re-crossing the road on a piecemeal basis would lead to a pedestrian AND traffic hazard. Injuries (not only to the pedestrians) would be highly likely.
Fortunately, whether rightly or wrongly, this warden has seen the obvious flaw in the system and has acted to protect the children's parents...and the motorists. He/she deserves praise for their initiative.

It is not good practice, these parents should not be encouraged... keep off the motorway!

At the very least they should all be made to hold hands.

The lollipop lady at the school nearest me uses a traffic light crossing to get the sprogs across.  There are two problems.  Firstly, she lets the kids cross as they come.  The result is the lights go red, cars stop, 1 or 2 kids cross, lights still red for about a minute (with no one crossing) and then she presses the button again as soon as it's green for cars.  Secondly, I see a lot of drivers who see the lollipop lady and forget about the traffic lights.  The kids finish crossing and the drivers carry on whilst it's still a red light.

Some of these people don't have a clue and I wonder what training they have. I'm guessing probably not a lot and a fair few aren't drivers.

Coming down a steep hill in Halifax area, and fortunately going very slowly, as it was hammering down.

I was very close to the crossing when she stepped out, with the kids following.

No ABS back then, so many a driver would have locked the wheels and crashed straight through them.
Only a cool head and experience at "Cadence Breaking" saved the day.

She got it wrong on so many levels. Firstly she should wait till traffic anticipated, and stopped, before even she should be on the road.

The kids shouldn't go onto the crossing until indicated to do so.

Anyway I hope she got the sack after I called the local authourity the following day!

They're everywhere these days.

The lollipop man near our house in London always had an unlit dog end stuck in his mouth.

There were two schools near us, and when he stepped out on the road to stop the traffic for kids from the junior school, all the senior school kids started to walk up in single file.

Horns were blaring and drivers were shouting. He used to swear at the kids to hurry up. I don't think he ever realised that they they did it on purpose to get him at it.

Just wondering if "Lollipop Persons" is just a UK thing like "Xmas Crackers"!

You are probably better off with the "Lollipop Person". At least they get out of the way when all are crossed!

How many times do you have to stop at a controlled crossing, when there is nobody in sight?
Or sit there for ages after people have crossed.

Credit to the great, and patient British motorist, for not running the red light! If only the great British pedestrians would follow the same rules!

The problem with pedestrian lights is the ridiculous delay before the lights change. Quite often after waiting an interminable amount of time the pedestrian will cross at some risk to himself and be away before the lights stop the traffic for the "invisible man".
Where is the logic in having the delay? They should change within a few seconds of being pressed, the traffic has to stop anyway so nothing is gained.
