I got a letter from the hospital this morning.

Well CMAT, I had a similar letter about 8 years ago after I'd had a CAT scan on my brain - and the neurologist did sign it, saying I was normal.
I then had 2 MRI scans on my bonce a year later - and  a further letter saying those were normal too.

Just goes to show how these quacks don't have a clue what they're talking about any more, eh?!

So they felt it necessary to run a test to find out if your brain was normal....yeah I can see that.

Had a MRI scan last week. Like lying inside a running petrol lawnmower with someone attacking it with a hammer drill.

You are fortunate that they didn't find a reason for boring through your skull for real.

I was at the hospital last week and my consultant said that the radiation dose from an X-ray is neglible. You could have one every day for the rest of your life and it would do you no harm. (Which surprised me)

More radiation from a CT scan. None from MRI

So your brain has no abnormalities and is functioning okay.
I'd ask for a second opinion if I was you.

I was asked to attend for an MRI about 4 years ago. I did go there, but said to the operator:

A) I'm claustrophobic, and that doesn't look 'user friendly'
B) There's no way I can keep still for 25-30 minutes, whether inside  that machine or not.

We settled for a CAT Scan, which proved normal.

They asked me again in June, I repeated my earlier statements.

He said there was a new £multi-million pound MRI machine that was faster.

I asked where it was. 

He said 'Sheffield, and it only takes 15-20 minutes.'

Stil no use to me, but another CAT scan proved normal.

Surprising.....I thought he was Britain's only surviving brain donor.

X-Rays are a piece of piss compared to Radiotherapy. In extensive Radiotherapy treatment, nurses aren't allowed in the same room, as one minute can, and I quote the Oncologist 'Fry their ovaries.'

That's good to hear.

I've had a worrying amount of x-rays and CT scans. MRI too, but, as pointed out above, no radiation from MRI scans.

Longest 20 minutes of my life CMAT. They enclose your head in a cage then push foam bolsters in by your cheeks to stop the head moving. You are then slid into a tunnel as far as your waist. Lying flat without a pillow becomes very uncomfortable after a few minutes. Just have to lie back and think of England as the saying goes.

It didn't bother me at all, Fenners.
In fact, the woman operating the MRI machine for the first one I had 'came in' on my headphones after about 5 minutes to ask if I was okay, as I hadn't moved a muscle and had my eyes closed - I was almost nodding off.
I think she thought I was dead!

I was ok too, Tommy Toes.

I just drifted off into my own little world for however long it took.

I actually got on the bed of the machinem which was a start. I looked over my head at the size of the opening and wasn't happy at all. When he got 'The Iron Mask' out, I got up and got off the bed.

They never show that mask in medical drama programmes do they.

I watched all 8 seasons of 'House', there must have been at least 50 MRI's in that time, but never an 'Iron Mask', not one.

And in Holby City a few weeks back, I saw an MRI on there, Eliot Hope had one, but with no mask.

The only issue I had with my MRI scan was keeping still but I can understand it being a problem for a person with claustrophobia.

I ound a CT scan to be far more unpleasant

I did, Foinavon (get piped music) but it was terrible stuff. I'd have been happier with the earplugs.
I think I've just got a capacity to 'put up with stuff' and the best way of doing so (for me) is to try and sleep my way through it.

I remember once getting the most dreadful pain in one of my teeth on an air flight and it was just unbearable to put up with. There was still something like 3 hours to fly - so I did the only thing I knew that would take the pain away and went to sleep.
I think I really must have self-hypnotised that day as there was nothing else that would have worked and I couldn't think of anything else to do.

I didn't have the same problem flying home but went to see the dentist when I got back and told him about it - and he reckoned it was just a very seldom seen reaction in an amalgam filling when the pressures changed in the aircraft. He said it was only usually seen in fighter pilots at extreme heights who then descend very rapidly

Luckily, it was a complete one-off, for me.
