My first wife was incredibly posh and her mother who was brought up in Raj India would never admit or accept I was a working class oik.She had a  running fantasy that I was a sort of artist. The father in law was an Air Commodore and once I had answered his opening question "what school did you go to?" without mentioning Harrow, Eton or Rugby he literally never spoke to me again.

Never knew FIL

MIL used to sulk and not speak for days so it was quite peaceful really.

Daughter-in-law was nice and friendly until she got son's ring on her finger. More distant now.

F-I-L okay, but we have no common interests. He doesn't like racing, tennis or boxing. I don't like cricket, stamp collecting or coin collecting. If I set the trip meter on my car to zero, and drive round there, it doesn't log 0.1 of a mile, unless I back up 6 feet and then go forward. Lucky if we see each other 6 times a year. He won't come here as we're a no smoking zone.   

M-I-L good cook, good with  accounts, totally useless at everything else. When they first moved here, she came round every day. After the re-decorating was finished I decided to ban smoking in the house. We only smoke in the garden now. She only comes round 3 or 4 times a year now.

Mrs CMAT goes round there every day.         

I ventured round there yesterday to look at his computer.  The F-I-L, M-I-L AND Mrs CMAT were in the conservatory, smoking like facking chimneys, with no windows or doors open, and the weather was windy but dry. Unfortunately our dog was asleep on a chair in there. Probably be the first dog to die of passive smoking.

After seeing some of these replies I think I should be a bit more grateful

I haven't spoken to my mother-in-law for 3 years. Well, I don't like to interrupt.

MIL - nice lady, veggie, but overall a decent person with strong morals.

FIL - well step FIL, very quiet, nothing in common, but if I start debates about say the death penalty or battery chickens then he soon comes out of his shell and we have a good argument. I'm all for the death penalty and would bloody love it if it came back to this country, he's totally against it... He's a veggie and thinks I should care about where my meat comes from, as sticking chickens in a little box and pumping them with steroids before they are slaughtered is cruel. My argument is that if I cared so much about the fecking animal then i wouldn't be eating it at all!

I think I might know why it's such a sensitive subject for him.

It makes no difference what anybody wants with regards to capital punishment. I'd like to see it come back for people caught bang to rights in serious cases, but alas...

It has been removed from the statute books for well over 10 years, and then Jack Straw signed the Sixth Protocol of the European Convention of Human Rights.

After that, parliament lost any option to reintroduce it.
