Yes, it's about 6 months since the father-in-law last facked up his computer, so here we go again. 
With Advent PCs (like mine) you save your docs and photos to discs, press some button or the other, and it will delete everything and reinstall Windows automatically.
I have no idea what make it is, but it's not Advent.
It runs on Windows XP
Start screen comes up, the little blue thing goes across the screen, again and again and again.
It keeps doing that for about 10 minutes, then a message comes up 'NO INPUT SIGNAL' and it restarts itself, and the same thing happens.
Turned it off, waited 30 seconds, then turned it back on.
Up comes the error screen, where you get to choose an option.
I went for 'LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION' - it 'beeped', then listed a screen full of drivers, then it froze. About 5 minutes later up came the message 'NO INPUT SIGNAL' again,and it restarted itself, again.
Turned it off, waited 30 seconds, then turned it back on.
This time I opted for 'SAFE MODE', it listed all the drivers again, then after a while, up came the message 'NO INPUT SIGNAL' again.
Turned it off, waited 30 seconds, then turned it back on.
This time I opted for 'SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING', it listed all the drivers again, then after a while, up came 'NO INPUT SIGNAL' again.
There was disc in the drive for his printer, but I took that out.
He said he hadn't touched anything, but the red BT Infinity cable was in one of the yellow slots at the back, not in the red slot. But putting it in the red slot hasn't helped.
How the fack do I get into it to see what's wrong?
Usual comedic comments and sarcasm expected, but hopefully, among those wondrous gems, will be the correct answer.

have you tried turning it off and turning it on again again?
Take battery out
disconnect from power
press start button for 30 secs or so
re connect power (not battery)

"No input signal" probably means that it was waiting for YO to press a key. That is only a guess, though.
u sure the problem is not the screen ,not the pc ,are u sure the pc is shutting down and not just the screen ?

No Input Signal is your monitor telling you it is not getting a signal from the PC.
As the link above says, it is most probably your video card is loose or a problem with the cable.
First check the cable is in the PC securely and in the back of the monitor securely. Check for any obvious damage on the cable. If you have a spare cable try using that.
Once you have established that the cable is probably OK, next look at the video card.
The video card is what you plug the monitor cable into in the back of the PC. Take the side off the PC and just take it out and put it back in again (there will be some plastic clips somewhere holding it in - DON'T force anything. If it's not easy to get out you are doing it wrong).
While it's out, look at it to see if there is any burnt bits on it or any obvious damage.
While in there, get the hoover going and clean all the dust that you can get to in the PC without damaging anything.
If that doesn't work, if you have an old PC lying around with a video card in, try using that (if there is a slot for it - if not, you can't!)
Then come back and let us know.

silly question, but if the internet cable was in the wrong socket is there any chance the monitor connection is either loose or is in the wrong port?
if he's move one cable maybe he's moved a couple, there might be at least 2, sometime 4 vga connections on the back not always next to each other
another way to check is attach another monitor & see if that works or take the monitor in question and stick it on a pc you know works and see if it fires up

sry, was going to say once you know it's not the monitor you'll be looking at mother board, hard drive or video card issues
Booting off a live cd will tell you if it boots. If it does, then the computer works and he has ballsed up Windows. Trouble is, you may not have such a beast.

Gets up, has dinner, smokes half a pack of ciggies then goes back to bed about 7-30.
Up at 11 and off to work.
I'm not available in the mornings or late evenings, and when he's up I'm generally having my dinner.
Greedy bastard won't retire and take it easy, money is his god.
Sunday is the day for all attempts to revive it.
Gets up, has dinner, smokes half a pack of ciggies then goes back to bed about 7-30.
Up at 11 and off to work.
