I'm having a bit of an existentialist episode.  I worked out the other day that, realistically, I'm unlikely to live long enough to read more than another couple of thousand books.  Since I've bought 600+ on kindle this year (can't resist their 0.99p sales), I can soon stop buying books and use the money for ho's and mind-altering substances.

We are the table cloth.  We are also the table.

Drink.  I've actually only fuelled up on 10 of the past 130+ days.  I was sort of leaving it for my less obligated days in the future but am bitterly realising maybe the internal apparatus is pretty shot already.  Can't blame it - heroic uncomplaining service for decades.  I also realise that every passing day degrades you.  Our best days are behind us - then another day passes and that best day is also gone.  Bugger.  Don't know how Kenny copes.

I'm sure I'll get to the point sooner or later.

I think the answer is to repent on your deathbed and discover Catholicism does in fact have all the answers.
Report The Leopard August 11, 2014 10:54 AM BST
Which , ofcourse, it doesn't !
Report rogerthebutler August 11, 2014 1:08 PM BST
Of course not, but as a punter you must recognise that converting to religion on your deathbed is the best bet to nothing you'll ever make.

I will tell you this, Bodil M - I don't buy these electronic books. In fact, I rarely buy books at all. I make my own these days, with cheap felt pens, toilet paper and rabbit skin glue. My new book has a page about JD Fergusson, the great Scottish painter, who refused to serve in the army because the uniforms were itchy. There is another page about Florence Maybrick, the horrid murd.......I MUST FLEE!!!!

Bodil - have you read "If My Aunty Betty Had A  Slice of Cake or Biscuit She Would Take It Upstairs to Eat All By Herself" by Brian Parr? Not sure it is available on Kindle. The front cover has a woman dressed in fifties gear including a green floral apron. She is taking hold of a bannister in order to climb the stairs. The carpet looks a bit threadbare. She is carrying a tray with food on it - like a bit of cake or something. Have you read this one?

Look - I'm trying to come to terms with the - apparent - fact I'm not immortal, and you lot aren't helping.

Come to think of it, you've never helped.  When I mentioned a few years ago that I had hair sprouting where no hair had sprouted before you were coarse/unsympathetic/anatomically incorrect.

Here is the start of the Brian Parr novel, Bodil. If you like it, I won't post any more :

Chapter One : The Evil Seductress from Trieste.

My Aunt Betty served the most marvellous teas. She would serve up cakes, biscuits and scones on one of those cake serving thingmies with the three plates and a metal pole holding them together. The tea was really strong, dark brown mahogany, like. She served sugar in cube form and you had a choice of white sugar or demerara sugar. One time I had a bakewell tart in round cake format, and another time I had a Jacob's Club biscuit with raisins in it. I stuck one in my pocket so that I could eat it when I got home, but unfortunately, it melted and ruined my worsted wool trousers. Mam couldn't get the chocolate out for love nor money, despite using Omo soap flakes.

After Aunty Betty had served us kids - me, William, Orville, Michael, Bernice and Trevor, she would retreat upstairs with her own tray of biscuits and cakes. She utterly abhorred scones and literally turned her nose up at them, even if they were home made with real margarine.

"On a Saturday, after we watched the wrestling on World of Sport on the telly, Aunt Betty would give us a choice of jelly fruit cups or madeira cake. William, Orville, Michael, Bernice and Trevor opted for the jelly fruit cups without hesitation or deviation while I, being more sensitive and highly strung after the unmasking of Kendo Nagasaki, chose the madeira.

Even now, whenever I dunk madeira cake into strong tea, the taste and smell instantly transports me to a narrow, confined space where a sweaty wrestler pretending to be a Japanese avenger gurns angrily at me, while wearing a pongy mauve jockstrap...which is why I tend to avoid madeira cake in favour of Danish marble cake."

But you tried to deny the fact by stating, somewhat ridiculously imo, that you were sitting behind him at Worcester racecourse.
